Sept. 11 Movie Night Highlights Discord in the Middle East
SANTA CLARITA, CA — 04 September 2008 — Looking for ways to make this Sept 11th positive and meaningful? From 6:30 to 8:30 pm, you can see a movie about positive steps being taken to overcome discord in the Middle East and listen to a national authority on the prospects for establishing peace in the region. And it's all free of charge, at Vincenzo's Pizza in Newhall.
The Movies-to-Talk-About movie on Thursday September 11 at 6:30 pm is "Encounter Point". As violence continues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, some of those touched by the bloodshed become advocates for peace. This documentary introduces citizens on both sides for whom an end to conflict has become a personal crusade. Family members of slain Palestinians and Israelis, both military and civilian, share their stories and how they’ve turned their grief into a force for change in the region.
Ms. Wafa Shami, Program Director of the nationally and internationally influential Middle East Peace Education Program will be the guest speaker. Born and raised in Palestine, Ms. Shami brings a great passion to work for peace in the Middle East, along with a wealth of personal, educational and employment experiences. After working full time with United Nations Works and Relief Agency for Palestine refugees in Jerusalem for eight years, Wafa moved to the USA in 1999 to pursue a Masters in International Studies at North Carolina State University. She worked with the local American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity in Raleigh, NC. Wafa is currently heading the Middle East Peace Education Program for American Friends Service Committee, which has offices around the world.
"Movies to Talk About" is held at Vincenzo’s Pizza Esperienza, 24504½ Lyons Ave, in Newhall. The event is free and open to the public. Free soft drinks are provided. Participants may purchase dinner or snacks, or just come for the movie and presentation. For more information, visit www.UUofSCV.org and click on Goings-On/Events or call 661-254-7866. Movies-to-Talk-About is a community service of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Santa Clarita Valley.
