Winning VIA Star Students Set to Present at Business Luncheon
Top placed teams in the fourth annual Valley Industrial Association VIA STAR competition on tap to present their winning business plan
SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA (November 5, 2008) — The Valley Industrial Association announces the completion of the 2008 VIA STAR contest, a product development contest designed to partner local K-12 student teams with Santa Clarita Valley businesses. Student teams winning top honors will present their project at the next Valley Industrial Association luncheon on Tuesday, November 18, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Valencia, 24500 Town Center Drive in Valencia.
Each year VIA sponsors the STAR (Students Teaming to Achieve Results) program to give students a link to the business world. Students from elementary, junior and senior high schools throughout the Santa Clarita Valley are eligible to participate in the event. Teams consist of between 3 and 5 students and each team is paired with a teacher coach and participating business partner.
Over a two month period, team's research, brainstorm, design a new product or service for their host business, draft a business plan to build and market the product, and present their completed project to the host company as well as a panel of judges.
Teams are then judged on their business plan — vision, mission, objectives, strategies and plans — the planning process, presentation, use of resources and business evaluation. An awards program will be held on Monday, November 10, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Embassy Suites, 28508 Westinghouse Place in Valencia. The top three placing teams will each be awarded individual prizes and have an opportunity to present their project at the November 18 business luncheon.
The business luncheon is open to the public. Cost is $40 for VIA members and $50 for non-members. Reservations for the November 18 luncheon should be received by Thursday, November 13 and can be made by calling VIA at (661) 294-8088 or by visiting www.via.org.
