Summer School Starts Monday
With Record Enrollment
Summer school in the William S. Hart Union High School District opens at 7 a.m. Monday, June 16, with a record number of 6906 students registered. That number is up from 6,757 students at the same time last year, but actual enrollment is expected to be slightly less as students receive their final report cards and find their grades high enough to avoid summer classes.
The Hart District's summer school is designed on a number of levels. Remedial classes are available for students who failed classes during the past year or want to improve their grades. Enrichment classes are offered through a partnership with College of the Canyons for students who want to get ahead or improve their grades.
The Segue program is designed to help students at risk of not promoting from junior high school, and X-Treme Math helps prepare junior high school students for algebra.
The district's award-winning Intensive Literacy Program (ILP) helps students in grades six through 12 who are struggling with reading, offering small class sizes and activities geared to help students master reading and language arts. Many ILP students are able to raise their reading skills by one or more levels during the five-week intensive summer program.
The district currently has more than 1800 students enrolled in the ILP, Segue and X-treme Math programs this summer, compared to 1652 in 2007.
The district also offers a summer special education program for students whose Individualized Education Program calls for year-round educational services.
Summer school will meet daily through July 18, with the exception of the July 4 holiday. Two periods will be offered each day, running from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 9:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The early start gives students and staff the benefit of a full afternoon off, avoids the worst of summer heat, and allows the district to save on electrical rates, which go up after noon in the summer.
All Hart District high school campuses will house some summer programs this year, the first time in a number of years that some campuses have not been closed due to summer construction programs. The ILP, Segue and X-treme Math programs will be offered at Hart and Golden Valley high schools only.
The summer school programs offer a benefit to the district's administrative staff as well as to students. Summer administrator and administrative intern positions offer experience to the district's administrators, who often go on to higher level administrative positions in the future.
This year's summer school administrators include Andy Keyne, Canyon High School; Joel Nelson, Golden Valley; Mark Crawford, Hart; Mark Overdevest, Saugus; Valencia, Les Luxmore; and Brian Necessary, West Ranch. All six serve as assistant principals during the regular school year. Overall summer school administrator at the district level is Danny McHorney.
