Rio Norte Junior High Concert Band Participates in
"The National Anthem Project: Restoring America's Voice"
The Rio Norte Junior High Concert Band will perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, in the campus quad to celebrate The National Anthem Project: Restoring America's Voice. This multi-year educational campaign to restore America's voice through music education is sponsored by MENC: The National Association for Music Education.
Veterans in the local area are being invited to drop by the school and join in the project. "They are the reason we have the freedoms we have," explained Jeffrey Gilbert, Rio Norte's band director. Elected officials also have been invited to participate. The celebration will be kicked off by Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar.
The campaign launch comes on the heels of a recent Harris Poll that shows two out of three Americans don't know the words to "The Star-Spangled Banner," and many are unaware of the historical events that inspired the penning of the song. The campaign aims to shine the spotlight on the importance of school music programs, as this is where most Americans learn the national anthem and other patriotic songs.
Gilbert has been the teaching music on the campus at Rio Norte since the school opened in 2003. He is also the director for music education with the Santa Clarita Symphony
