Paper Beats Rock at the YMCA
Charity Roshambo Tournament July 19
"Be the Rock... or Paper, or Scissors for the YMCA," said Chris Clark, Director of Development & Communications of the Santa Clarita Valley Family YMCA as he was explaining the concept of the 2008 Charity Roshambo Tournament. "Many think that the game of Rock, Paper and Scissors is just a game of luck, but there is also some skill involved with it. This is not a random luck of the draw type of game. While some compare the odds similar to a coin-toss, it can actually be played with strategy as competitors play multiple rounds in a tournament format and recognize the non-random behavior of the person that they are playing against."
Not just a kids game anymore, the game of Roshambo is popping up in more and more places. During last Sunday's premier of the CBS reality television show "Big Brother 10" contestants of the same team decided who would win a classic car in one of the challenges by playing Rock, Paper and Scissors. There was also a recent Federal Court Case in Florida where opposing sides could not mutually agree to a location to host a heated deposition. The judge ruled that attorneys from both sides should appear on the front steps of the courthouse and play one game of rock, paper, and scissors with the winner picking the deposition location.
"The 2008 Charity Roshambo Tournament will be a first of its kind in Santa Clarita," said Clark. "With just a handful of players this year, the games will go fast but the donations that have been raised because of this will go a long way for our YMCA kids and families."
"For over 20 years, the Santa Clarita Valley Family YMCA has been building strong kids, strong families and a strong community right here in our home town," said Jane S. Albin, Executive Director of the YMCA. "Best known for our youth and family programs, the YMCA provides school-age childcare, parent-child programs, swim lessons, activities for seniors, camping, teen programs, and a healthy lifestyles facility. This abundance of offerings allows the YMCA to effectively meet the needs of a growing and more diverse Santa Clarita community reaching 5,000 people annually."
Saturday's Roshambo event will take place at the YMCA facility on McBean Parkway at 5pm and is open to the public.
