Santa Clarita Valley Family YMCA Holds Annual Pinewood Derby Race
On Sunday, January 25 at 12 noon at Saugus High School, over 150 YMCA Pinewood Derby participants aged from five to nine and their parents will "start their engines" or more accurately, will drop their cars from the starting line of the track hoping to place in the yearly event.
A carefully constructed track with computerized timing devices will determine who places first, second and third in this highly anticipated yearly event.
"While the computer decides who wins the race," said Jane S. Albin, Executive Director of the Santa Clarita Valley Family YMCA, "each of the kids who are participating are winners. The Pinewood Derby is a clear example of what the Y-Guides are all about. Y-Guides are groups of parent-child pairs who have the opportunity to come together to strengthen their relationship through activities that are challenging and enjoyable, such as volunteering in the community, attending weekend campouts and other community driven events. This program is aimed at parents and their school aged children. One parent and one child spend time together on their own, sharing experiences that lead to a better understanding of each other and a closer relationship."
