House Blend | Episode 54: The Narwhals
|
Popular young Santa Clarita rock band The Narwhals – formerly The Feaver – return to debut their new name, sound and songs on a brand-new edition of SCVTV’s “House Blend” hosted by Santa Clarita music journalist Stephen K. Peeples, premiering Saturday at 10 p.m. (Pacific). SCVTV, community television for the Santa Clarita Valley, telecasts the WAVE-nominated music-and-interview “House Blend” series on Time-Warner Channel 20 in the SCV and AT&T U-Verse 99 in Los Angeles and Orange counties. “House Blend” also streams live simultaneously at www.scvtv.com. Cole Preston (drums, vocals), Braeden Lemasters (vocals, guitar), Dylan Minnette (vocals, guitar) and Zack Mendenhall (bass, vocals) were in their early teens in fall 2010, when they made their first-ever TV appearance on “House Blend.” The quartet had been together less than a year but had already mastered a classic rock repertoire and attack. They had also just begun writing original songs, two of which (“Saturday Night” and “Kids on the Street”) were featured in Season 1 of “House Blend.” After three years and much progression, the band members spent the last half of 2013 working on new original material and further retooling their guitars-and-vocals-driven sound. Now in their late teens, Minnette, Lemasters, Mendenhall and Preston re-emerged in January 2014 with a new name and new songs, and make their first TV appearance as The Narwhals on the March 15 edition of “House Blend’s” fourth season. The Narwhals ‘House Blend’ Set This time, The Narwhals rock the SCVTV Media Center stage in Newhall with four songs instead of The Feaver’s two. This “House Blend” set marks the first live TV performance of all four Narwhals songs. The band opens with “The Formula,” an updated Feaver favorite, and follows with three new Narwhals songs — “Hello, You There?,” “Surf, Surf, Don’t Drown” and ”All the Places.” The latter song is the debut single by The Narwhals, available now on iTunes and other digital outlets. The group has also posted the audio version of “The Formula” and home demos of “Hello, You There?’ and “All the Places” on their Soundcloud channel. What’s a Narwhal? Between “House Blend” performances, the group chats with Peeples. They talk about how and why The Feaver morphed into The Narwhals; exactly what a narwhal is and why they chose the name; writing and recording their first single; playing The Roxy, The Whisky, the House of Blues in Chicago, and a cornfield in the Midwest; extra-band activities including film and TV roles; EDM production; and more. Peeples books, researches and writes “House Blend,” and co-produces the show with SCVTV studio director Megan Perez at the SCVTV Media Center in Newhall, Calif. Perez also directs the show, assisted by SCVTV producer/director Austin Dave, sound engineer Mike Mazzetti and the studio staff. Leon Worden, SCVTV president/CEO, is the series’ executive producer. Now in its fourth season, “House Blend” premiered on SCVTV Saturday, Sept. 2, 2010 and airs each Saturday at 10 p.m. Pacific Time, with encore broadcasts Thursday nights at 10.
