Caltrans News Flash: 6-Inch Striping Enhances Safety

In this Caltrans News Flash, Public Information Officer Rick Estrada visits with Senior Transportation Engineer Mark Orr to discuss the transition from 4-inch wide highway striping to 6-inch wide stripes on state highways. These wider stripes, and the reflective material in the paint, will make the road more visible in darkness, as well as inclement weather such as rain, snow and fog. It will also make it easier for autonomous vehicles to “see” the lines and stay in their lane. The new striping program is just one of the many projects that have been accelerated thanks to Senate Bill 1, which will invest $5.4 billion a year over the next decade to fix California’s transportation system.
