SCVTV’s Community Corner: Fireworks Safety Message

On this segment from SCVTV’s Community Corner, city of Santa Clarita Mayor Jason Gibbs and various emergency officials share the importance of leaving fireworks to the professionals in a video highlighting the dangers of illegal fireworks.

All fireworks are illegal in the city of Santa Clarita, even those labeled as “Safe and Sane.” Officials from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station say they are inundated with over 300 calls for service every 4th of July.

To help keep up with emergencies this year, the SCV Sheriff’s Department plans to have two full teams of deputy sheriffs dedicated to fireworks suppression in addition to their normal patrol.

SCV Sheriff officials also noted that any fires started by illegal fireworks are going to be considered negligent and the person responsible will likely face criminal charges.

According to Los Angeles County Fire officials, in 2022, the L.A. County Fire Department monitored fireworks-related emergency activity in the weeks before and after the 4th of July and found that L.A. County firefighters responded to 53 fires started by fireworks, 16 firework-related injuries, and noted $932,000 in property loss and damage.

The city of Santa Clarita in partnership with the SCV Sheriff’s Department will continue to use the Resident Service Center to identify hot spots for illegal fireworks. Officials say residents can report illegal fireworks by visiting santa-clarita.com/rsc.
