This special episode of SCVTV’s Community Corner is dedicated to wildfire safety and preparedness! In the wake of the recent Southern California wildfires that scorched thousands of acres and displaced countless families and pets, being ready has never been more important. We’ll learn how to support the American Red Cross’s wildfire relief efforts, manage your mental health during emergencies with the Child & Family Center, prepare for wildfires with the City of Santa Clarita, and safely evacuate your pets with guidance from the L.A. County Animal Care Foundation. We’ll also introduce you to three adorable canines from the Castaic Animal Care Center looking for forever homes. Plus, find out how the recent and fast-moving Hughes Fire impacted the Center and its animals. More from This Week’s Guest Lineup Kicking off this week’s episode, host Carrie Lujan and guest host Roger Willcox give a shoutout to local first responders, including Los Angeles County Fire Department Assistant Chief Patrick Sprengel, who were on the front lines of the Palisades and Hughes fires. Plus, Roger, who also serves as the City of Santa Clarita’s Emergency Operations Analyst, shares important tips on making sure your donations truly help those in need. From there, we turn to Angel Sauceda, who shares how residents from the Eaton Fire are coping with the devastating losses they’ve experienced and what you can do to help. Following this, Nikki Buckstead, CEO of the Child & Family Center, joins us to discuss the mental health impacts of wildfires and other crises, offering guidance on navigating this “new normal.” Then, Roger goes more in-depth into the City’s Office of Emergency Management and explains why preparedness is key. He breaks down practical steps residents can take to stay ready for natural disasters. Next, we shift our focus to our four-legged friends. Marcia Mayeda, Director of Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control, shares the massive effort behind evacuating hundreds of animals during the recent fires and provides essential tips on ensuring your pets’ safety during an emergency. Finally, we talk to longtime Castaic Animal Care Center volunteer Paul Martinson as he introduces SCVTV correspondent Elizabeth Medina to three awesome canines who are ready for adoption! Plus – Paul recounts his personal experience during the Hughes Fire, as he found himself on the front lines trying to evacuate the Center’s dozens and dozens of animals.
