SCVTV's Community Corner | How SUSD Supports Students’ Mental Health, Wellness
|
Saugus Union School District’s Assistant Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services Michelle Barries and Student Support Services Coordinator Tonya Nowakowski joined SCVTV’s Community Corner to share how they’ve fostered a culture of mental health and wellness across their entire district, utilizing strategies that have both positively impacted their schools and have earned them national recognition. One of SUSD’s commitments is to foster a culture of inclusivity and to promote positive mental health. This commitment led SUSD to earn national recognition for their work: their school sites earned recognition as America’s Healthiest Schools from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a $15,000 grant from Kaiser Permanente to implement programs that continue to better students’ mental health and wellness, and multiple schools were given a Positive Behavior Intervention and Support–P.B.I.S.–recognition. SUSD employs multiple strategies to ensure that their students are able to learn in an environment where they feel supported and welcomed.
