Hi again everybody and welcome to another edition of Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to give you high school and college basketball highlights from the past week,
Our lead story tonight, Garrett Tujague, the head football coach at College of the Canyons since 2007, is stepping down to become the offensive line coach at BYU. Tujague was an all-conference offensive lineman there from 1989 to 1991, winning three WAC championships and blocking for Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer. Tujague came to College of the Canyons as an assistant coach after stints with Chabot College and the University of Redlands, taking over the head coaching duties when Chuck Lyon stepped aside to become the school's athletic director. Canyons will be looking to hire a new head coach on a one-year interim basis.
Former Valencia Viking and current New England Patriot Shane Vereen had a huge coming out party Sunday in front of a national audience in the Pats 41-28 playoff victory over the Houston Texans. Vereen had 124 yards of total offense and three touchdowns, the third being this difficult over-the-shoulder catch with tight coverage. Vereen and the Patriots will now play in the AFC Championship game Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.
Turning to high school basketball where the Foothill League is well underway. On the boys side the Hart Indians, ranked No. 1 in Division 3-Triple A, hosted the No. 2 team in Division 1-A the West Ranch Wildcats in front of a packed Hart gym. And the Wildcats had their way early. Kevin Harris hits the three as part of an 8-0 open. Later in the first quarter, Hart's Davis Koppenhaver tried the three, misses, Myles Franklin gets the rebound and takes it the the rack to cut the West Ranch lead to four. Then Kevin Harris with the lob to the big fella... Ako Kaluna had a game-high 24 points. In the second half after West Ranch led at half by 14, the Indians try for a comeback. Koppenhaver with the steal, keeps it inbounds, ahead to Franklin who feeds Andrew MacArthur who lays it in. He would make the free throw for the 3-point play. Kevin Harris, though, was making it rain threes in Newhall. He would finish with four threes and 18 points. At the end of the third quarter, Kaluna misses. Harris steals it back and at the buzzer his the floater to keep the Wildcats lead at 12. The Indians closed to within six in the fourth, but the gap was too much as the Wildcats take the early advantage in the race for the championship. (70-63)
Last year's co-league champs, the Canyon Cowboys, opened on the road at Golden Valley. Both teams with first-year head coaches. The story of this one would be Canyon's outside shooting. Sophomore Ben Taufehema drains the three, and moments later Park McKenzie, adding a greater degree of difficulty on his shot, gives the Cowboys a 13-point lead. Golden Valley, looking for their first league win since February 11, 2010, bounces back. Leon Jacobs down the baseline with the reverse lay-up. And if that didn't get the crowd pumped, Corbin Lee at the buzzer from 30 feet... Canyon would lead by six at the break. In the third quarter, Mark Bell would continue the long-range theme for Canyon, hitting the three despite getting hit himself. No foul and Canyon leads by eight. Then in the fourth quarter with Canyon up by five, James Chevious hits the three to draw the Grizzlies to within one. But in the end it was too much outside shooting as Bell seals the deal with the Cowboys 14th 3-pointer, and Canyon gives first-year head coach Sean DeLong his first league victory. (79-72)
The Hart Indians were looking to rebound after their opening game loss to West Ranch, travelled to Saugus who also came in with an 0-1 record. Jumping to the third quarter. Two quick passes finds an open Zach Garlitos to nail a three, putting Saugus up by 12. But not so fast as Lewis Stallworth quickly returns the favor, up the court, with a layup and the foul. He would then complete the three-point play. Now onto the fourth quarter, Stallworth again, going up against three defenders cuts the Saugus lead to 7. Back come the Centurions as Jacob Tobon with the one-handed tear drop keeps the Indians at bay. Moments later and Saugus leading by nine, Myles Franklin stepped up in a big way, scoring 5 in back to back possessions for the indians to cut the lead to 4. Franklin ended up with 14 points in the 4th quarter alone, giving him 30 for the game. With 209 seconds to play in regulation and the Centurions clinging to a four-point lead, Chase White finds Stallworth to nail the three, and what was a 12-point lead for Saugus is now down to one. Stallworth scored a game-high 33 points. Tobon then hit two free throws with 5 point 5 seconds to play to send the game to OT. With the Indians holding onto a one-point lead, Myles Franklin comes up with the steal and the score to put the Indians up by three. Next Saugus possession, Tobon looking to tie but its off the iron. A big strong rebound by Stanley Wilder, up against two Centurions who then outlets it to Chase White who finds Lewis Stallworth breaking down the court , up against Tobon and he ices the games for the Indians. Hart gets their first win of league. (78-76)
Saugus, now riding a six-game losing streak, then had to go to West Ranch who were looking to stay undefeated in league. Early in the 1st quarter, Jeff Ashburn cross court to Amir Mirtabatabaie for the jam. Ako Kaluna gets an assist when Ryan Beddeo hits one of his three 3 pointers in the game. Kyle Williams comes up with the rebound off the miss by Saugus and gives it up to Kevin Harris for the fast break slam. 12-9 West Ranch. As time is running out in the 1st, down 4, Zach Garlitos is found wide open for three of his eight points in the game. Midway through the 2nd, Beddeo drives and gets the lay up high off the glass that would spark a 12 - 0 run to end the 1st half. Beddeo scored 16 of his 21 points in the first half and shot 70% from the field. Saugus looking for some offense in the third, Tobin to Mirtabatabaie for two of his nine points. Harris on the other end hits his 3rd shot from downtown. He would finish with 17. Down by 18, Chris Lockwood, who was the Centurions only player in double figures, drains the outside shot. He would finish with 11 points. Saugus not giving up as Tobin drives and scores the lay up. Then he intercepts the inbounds pass, kicks it to Garlitos and its good! Saugus would pull to within 11 but it would be too late as Kaluna finishes on the break scoring 8 of his 12 points in the final 5 minutes. The Wildcats get their 6th win in their last 7 and after a 10 - 3 start, the Centurions have dropped 7 in a row. (73-57)
The Valencia Vikings then brought their 2-0 league record into an always raucous Canyon gym to take on the 1-1 Cowboys. Defense was the key in this one, with exhibit A being Riley Honaker stealing it away from Marc Cabrera and getting the lay-up on the other end. But Cabrera would make his own exhibits as he scored all eight of the Cowboys first eight points. Here getting the feed from Markie Cortez for the reverse lay-up. In the second quarter more defense from the Vikings as Kayode Wellington gets the steal, down the court to Timothy Joyce, blocked by Park McKenzie, but goal-tending is the call against McKenzie. Count the bucket and the Vikings lead by nine at the half. In the second half the Cowboys used defense of their own. Cabrera with the steal, ahead to Mark Bell for the lay-up. The Vikings, though, closed out the third quarter on a 15-4 run. Garrett Mike tries the three, no good, but Wellington is there all alone for the rebound and the put back. Valencia led by 19 after three. In the final frame, Cabrera with the nice play for two of his team-high 12 points. But the defense of Valencia proves to be the difference as the Vikings go to 3-0 in league with the 16-point win. (58-42)
We're going to take a break here on Inside Sports and when we return we are going to give you highlights of girls basketball over the last week, and a look at the College of the Canyons women's basketball program, one of the most successful in the state for the last 15 years. That's all coming up on Inside Sports.

Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. Girls Foothill League basketball is only three games into the season but it's already looking like a catfight. Hart got their first league win in nearly two years Tuesday, and Canyon, considered the premier team of the league and ranked fourth in division 2-Double A, lost to Valencia, the only undefeated team left in league. So the match-up between West Ranch and Saugus was pivotal in early positioning for those elusive playoff spots. The Wildcats were coming off a loss at Canyon while the Centurions were looking for their 1st road win in league. West Ranch's Whitney Branham drives and dishes it Melanie Jensen for the easy two. Later in the first, Hannah Green brings it up the court and drains two of her 10 points in the game. The Centurions keep pace as Alexa Ferrante dishes off to Faye Osburn who hits the shot from downtown. Then, Osburn knocks the ball away, hustles after the ball for the steal and gets the lay-up. She would shoot 6-for-10 in the game for 15 points. Ferrante sets up McKayla Cook for the shot off the glass. Centurions up 10. Justice Bennett with one of her five assists, finds Cook who again scores in the paint. She shot 50% with eight points. West Ranch star Whitney Branham had a rough night going 3 for 13 but gets this one. She’d be just shy of a double double with nine points 10 boards. Later in the second half, Ferrante with the steal lobs it up to Bennett for the fast break lay up. The Wildcats try to claw their way back in. Jensen shoots from the corner of the key, no good, but Green with one of her five offensive boards puts it back in. She’d finish with 10 points and 18 total rebounds. The Saugus defense was too much on this night as Ferrante picks off the ball again for her 4th steal and finishes on the other end with the dagger. Saugus is now tied for second in league with West Ranch, one of the favorites, dropping to fourth. (45-37)
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports and as we do I want to introduce you to Matt Edwards, the Wendy's of Santa Clarita and SCVTV Student Athlete of the Week.

Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. The College of the Canyons Lady Cougars have success at the core. Some of you may know Greg Herrick as my partner on high school basketball broadcasts, but his real job for the last 21 years has been as the head coach of this storied team. In those 21 years, the Lady Cougars have won nearly 90 percent of their games, won 14 conference championships and appeared in the California state basketball tournament five times. His 1997 team set the California Community College single-season scoring record when the team averaged 95.7 points per game. But that was then. What does the current team look like? Tigran Martirosian tells us.
()
The Lady Cougars will next be home at the Cougar Cage on Saturday, January 26th, when they take on Glendale College. That's going to do it for us today on Inside Sports. Thanks for being here everyone. We will see you again next time.
