Hi again everybody and welcome to another edition of Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to give you high school and college basketball highlights from the past week, introduce you to the new head coach at College of the Canyons, and give you a feature Golden Valley's leon Jacobs and his plans to be the next great linebacker at Wisconsin. But our lead story comes from every part of this valley as athletes committed themselves to the next level on National Signing Day on Wednesday.
(National Signing Day)
Tedric Thompson from Valencia decided against joining his brother, not to mention former Viking Brock Vereen, at Minnesota and instead chose to become a Buffalo at the University of Colorado.
All-state and record-breaking wide receiver Drew Wolitarsky of Canyon announced LAST week that he WILL go on to Minnesota to play in the Big 10 as a Gopher, and he will be HIT by Golden Valley's Leon Jacobs, who has committed to Wisconsin as a linebacker.
At College of the Canyons, three players signed letters of intent to join three others who had already verbally committed. Former Hart defensive lineman Justyn Eddins has committed to play at the University of Texas at San Antonio, a division one FBS school, cornerback Sam Lee will follow former Canyons head coach Garrett Tujague to BYU, safety Eric Finney will go to the Illini, Jesse Sampson will become a Wyoming Cowboy, offensive lineman Lloyd Tunstill is turning into a horned frog, and Jake Wooley will join the Vikings in division one's football championship subdivision.
Wednesday also saw the official announcement of Ted Iacenda as the new interim head coach of College of the Canyons football. Iacenda first found glory on the same field he will now preside over from 1993-1995 as a running back for Hart. As an Indian, Iacenda scored 99 touchdowns over his career, led Hart to a CIF championship in 1995, and won back-to-back CIF Player of the Year honors in 94 and 95. He then went on to USC and finally New Mexico before returning to Canyons as an assistant to Chuck Lyon. Since 2006 Touchdown Teddy has been an assistant to Dean Herrington at Bishop Alemany High School. I asked Iacenda what it means to be named the new head coach for Canyons football.
(Iacenda)
Iacenda will have to keep the Interim tag through the 2013 season because of state community college requirements. Turning to high school basketball as we are in the final week of the regular season, and that means championships are on the line. First let's look at girls basketball where the undefeated in league Valencia Vikings hosted the Canyon Cowboys, a team whose only loss was to these Vikings.
(Canyon/Valencia Girls Basketball)
In the 1st quarter off a miss by the Vikings, Canyon's Alia Mccoy gets her 1st of 8 boards, brings it up and passes it up to Marrissa Schwimmer for 2 of her 5 points. Later in the first, Mccoy hands it off to Jaya Schultz, who then finds Mccoy cutting to the basket for the open lay up. The Vikings were held to just three points in the 2nd quarter and this was it by Anumba. She would finish with seven and add six boards. Canyon back on offense, it's Mccoy to Kali Vittallo, back to Mccoy again cutting, GETS the and-1 bucket for 2 of her 10 1st half points. But the Vikings would come back. Early 3rd quarter, Kalia Summerlin gives the Vikings the lead with this three, she was 3-of-10 from behind the arc. Vittallo hit 2 of 3 from downtown, getting this bomb to tie it. Later, Schultz picks off the Vikings for her 6th steal and gets the fast break bucket. She scored 11 of her 14 total in the 2nd half. Back come the Vikings. Summerlin comes up with 1 of her 2 thefts and finds Talia Roth up ahead for the easy 2. 37 - 32 Vikings up going into the 4th. Schwimmer hands it off to Schultz who kicks it out to Vittallo and drains the deep 3. She would finish with 14 points. Next possession, Schwimmer to Schultz again, but this time Schultz takes it to the rack for the old fashion 3. Cowboys up 1. Later it's McCoy's turn to add to the 11 - 2 Cowboys run to start the 4th. She would finish with a game-high 17 points. Schultz then knocks down the long two as her foot was on the line and the Cowboys outscore the Vikings 15 - 8 in the 4th to put Canyon in a tie with Valencia at the top of the Foothill League standings. After the game, head coach Chuck Johns talked about the win.

So moving to the season finale Friday and the game you saw right here on SCVTV with the Vikings, in need of a win just to assure at least a tie for the league title, going to West Ranch where the Wildcats had been playing hot and needing a win for their own playoff hopes. Valencia came out ready to TAKE the championship. Kalia Summerlin was hot, hitting the three to put the Vikings up by five. Turnovers were a problem for West Ranch. Five givebacks in the first five minutes helped Valencia jump up to a 16-point lead. Talia Roth with the finish. The Wildcats fought back. Jasmin Hayes with the drive, BLOCKED by Sandra Ikeora, but picked up by Whitney Branham for the score. Then Hannah Green pulls up for the 12-foot jumper for two of her 19 points for West Ranch. But this game came down to the senior play of Summerlin. She gets the rebound and the put back for two of her game-high 23 points for Valencia. The Vikings led by 11 at the half. In the second half, Branham and Green showed why they are two of the best players not only for West Ranch but in Southern California. First Branham for three. Then off the Vikings in-bound, Green with one of her NINE blocks in the game. Then the 6-footer on the offensive side of the floor with two of her 19 points. But Summerlin kept the cats at bay, hitting the jumper from the free throw line, and the Vikings go on to win by 19.
We're going to take a break here on Inside Sports and when we return we are going to give you highlights of girls basketball over the last week, and a look at the College of the Canyons Hall of Fame induction ceremony. That's all coming up on Inside Sports.

Friday night here on SCVTV the West Ranch Wildcats needed a win to clinch at least a share of the league championship with Hart, but the Vikings were also in need of a win to help with their post-season positioning. The Wildcats came out playing like it was championship or die. Kevin Harris nails the three early as West Ranch opened up the game on a 6-0 run. Then it was Cody Sanders knocking down a three of his own and it's 17-4 Wildcats in the opening frame. Sanders had eight points in the game. Angel Cardenas came off the bench for Valencia and knocks down a three of his own, one of four he hit for a game-high 19 points. In the second quarter it's more of the same for Wewst Ranch. Harris off the steal lays it in and the Wildcats are up by 16. Ako Kaluna is known for breaking backboards and rims, but he also can shoot the bomb. West Ranch led by 21 at the half. Kyle Williams follows the Ako miss with two of his eight points and the Wildcats were making it look easy. The Vikings could never overcome the early lead West Ranch created, and the Wildcats win by 22 to let the celebration begin. And when you couple that win with the fact that Hart LOST by a point to Canyon, the Wildcats, for the second year in a row, are the champions of boys Foothill League basketball.
Hart despite losing just two games all season, has to settle for second in league followed by the Vikings. Canyon wins three of their last five to tie for fourth with Saugus.
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports and as we do I want to introduce you to (), the Wendy's of Santa Clarita and SCVTV Student Athlete of the Week.
