Hi everybody and welcome in to Inside Sports. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to take a look at the high school and colleges sports highlights from the last week here in Santa Clarita. We've also got a couple of features that, HOPEFULLY, will make you go "huh" and maybe even "WOW". So let's first go to the prep gridiron where Friday night saw plenty of action. On the game you saw right here on SCVTV, the West Ranch Wildcats continued their annual series with the St. Francis Golden Knights, this time from Dr. Paul Priesz Stadium at Valencia High School. From the first play of the game it looked like it was going to be a St. Francis run away. Tommy Scheper caught this pass from quarterback Jared Lebowitz and raced 65 yards for the score. After a two-point conversion, the Golden Knights were up 8-0 just 13 seconds into the game. When West Ranch finally got the ball, they turned it over. Gerritt Mouw goes back to pass and gets blind-sided by Cole Ramseyer. Sophomore Andrew Chesta falls on the ball on the Wildcat 16-yard line. The turnover led to the first of three Mark Verso field goals on the night. Midway thru the 1st quarter the Wildcats were down 14-0 and had been out-gained 135 to 14. But then it turned around. This 79-yard bomb from Mouw to Rawston Redick put West Ranch on the board at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter to take the lead at halftime 20-14. In the third quarter, this 31-yard field goal by Justice Rodrigues gave the Wildcats a 9-point lead. But St. Francis answered. On their next possession, Lebowitz finds running back Danial Kawamura for a 49-yard touchdown. Lebowitz finished 16-of-30 for 313 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. The Wildcats then answered with a drive culminated in this 9-yarder from Mouw to Redick. Redick caught eight for 166 yards and two touchdowns. But in the 4th quarter, St. Francis pulled away with 17 unanswered points and held off a late Wildcat charge to win 38-30. West Ranch drops to 1-4 going into a bye next week.
Over at Cougar Stadium the Hart Indians hosted the Birmingham Patriots. The Indians were looking to make it three wins in a row after dropping their season opener. Let's pick up the action in the 2nd quarter as Antoine Holmes goes up the middle from three yards out to give the Indians a three touchdown lead. Three minutes later the Patriots came back. First this 14-yard run by Isaiah Hastings, looking like past Birmingham star Milton Knox, that then set up a six-yard run up the middle by Hastings, losing his helmet as he stretched for the score. In the third quarter we see what MAY be the CATCH of the year. Sophomore quarterback Brady White going long for Wes Fitzpatrick. The ball goes OFF Fitzpatrick's shoulder pads, only to have the senior stretch back and make the catch before the ball hits the turf. The play apparently caused some in the crowd to flip with joy. Junior Connor Wingenroth takes his turn at quarterback, finding Fitzpatrick for a nice catch in the back of the end zone for a 10-yard score. Fitzpatrick had six catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Birmingham got their second score of the night right before the half when quarterback Emanuel Castro scrambles for time and finds London Bell alone in the end zone for the 7-yard touchdown. But this night really belonged to Brady White, here connecting with Fitzpatrick who makes a NICE move to get into the end zone. White was 21 of 28 for 270 yards and four touchdowns as the Indians win big over Birmingham. (55-14)
In other Foothill League action on Friday, Valencia's Sean Murphy threw for 380 yards and five touchdowns as the Vikings beat up Santa Monica (41-13)... Austin Davenport, the third different player in the first five games to play quarterback for Saugus, threw for 186 yards and a touchdown, and ran for another, in the Centurions road loss to Taft (48-20)... Golden Valley scored the first points in three games against a back-to-form Notre Dame squad (48-6)... Canyon had their bye week this week and did not play.
In other high school football, Jonathan Saavedra throws three touchdown passes as Santa Clarita Christian improves to 3-2 in their second season of 11-man football with a shut out win over Keppel...
And in 8-man, quarterback Dakota Prochnow goes 10-of-12 for 143 yards and four TDs and ran for 103 in Trinity's big win over Fulton to go 3-1 on the season ...
In college football Saturday, the Cougars were back home at College of the Canyons, still in search of their first win of the season. That had a good shot going up against 0-3 Pasadena. Let's pick up the action in the second quarter with Canyons trailing 3-0, Dan Vear hauls in this 17-yarder from Ryan Kasdorf to give the Cougars the lead. Kasdorf threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Then in the third, Vear again from Kasdorf, this time from 12 yards out and the Cougars led by 11. Vear caught four passes on the day for 86 yards and two TDs. Then in the fourth with the score now 22-6, Kasdorf will take it himself to make it a 23-point lead. Kasdorf led all runners for COC with 81 yards. Late in the game with the outcome locked up, former Canyon quarterback Ben Longshore finds Kenny Feyh for the 27-yard score as the Cougars get their first win of the season...
The USC Trojans got back their winning ways with a win over Cal at the Coliseum. The Trojans don't play again until Thursday, October 4th against Utah in Salt Lake City... And the No. 19 Bruins get beat at the Rose Bowl by the Beavers in their conference opener. UCLA travels to Boulder on Saturday to take on Colorado.
We're going to take a break here on Inside Sports, and when we return we're going to take a look at some of the other sports in action last week... Girls volleyball and the first league meet of the cross country season as well as the first girl's golf match. So stay tuned.
(BREAK)
Welcome back in to Inside Sports. The Valencia Volleyball team is one of the favorites for league this year, and with the Yellowjackets from Oxnard coming up to the Santa Clarita Valley for a Wednesday match, the Vikings showed why. (Highlights) The Vikings win it in straight games.
Over in Newhall on Thursday the Hart Indians had a big test as they took on the defending City Scetion champions the Granada Hills Highlanders. But from the onset it was the Indians in control. (Highlights). The Indians improve to 4-1 with a 3 games to none win. Foothill League play begins Thursday.
Let's move now to cross country where the Saugus girls team is the six-time defending STATE champions in this sport. Thursday was the first league meet of the season and for the Centurions, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 poll and they did what they have been doing -- WIN. For every team you beat you get a win, so in the one-day event, Saugus beat all the other Foothill League teams to go to 5-0. Golden Valley, ranked 10th in the CIF poll, finished second followed by West Ranch, Canyon, Valencia and Hart. Golden Valley's Chelsea Totten won the three-mile race, with Saugus's Samantha Ortega and Abigail Frankian finishing 2nd and 3rd... On the boys side Saugus and Golden Valley there too have the strongest teams, with the Centurions ranked third in CIF and the Grizzlies fifth. The battle for league supremacy in 2012 should come down to those two teams. At Central Park, the Centurions drew first blood as they win it, with the Grizzlies coming in second followed by Hart, Canyon, West Ranch and Valencia. Individually it was Canyon's Zach Wims' strong finish that gave him a 2-plus second win over Golden Valley's Nolan Del Valle. Saugus's Rodrigo Ornelas came in third.
Turning to golf where the first league match of the girls golf season took place Tuesday at the par-31 El Cariso Golf Course in Sylmar, and despite not having their top player, sophomore Julie Ward, West Ranch came out on top with a seven-stroke victory over Golden Valley. Yes, that's right, the Grizzlies
College of the Canyons womens soccer team is creating national attention on a big stage. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America released their poll of best teams in the country, and the Cougars are ranked 9th. Canyons is the defending Western Conference champions and return 13 players from that squad. The team is 6-0-1 so far in 2012.
When we come back after the break, I'm going to introduce you to a brand new cheer squad in Santa Clarita, the first of it's kind EVER. But before we go, let's first meet this week's student athlete of the week.
(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports. It is very seldom that a teenager can have a dream to do something and actually become one of the first to ever do it. But that is exactly what has happened at Valencia High School.
