Welcome in to another edition of Inside Sports. I'm Dave Caldwell, and for the next 30 minutes we are going to take you through the final non-league tune-ups of Foothill League football, the START of league play in girls volleyball, and a look at some of the nationally ranked teams from The Master's College. And of course, we will get caught up in college football. So we've got a full show today. Let's start with the game you saw here Friday night on SCVTV, the Hart Indians hosting the Santa Monica Vikings. The Indians scored early and often, starting with this 12-yard touchdown pass from Brady White to Wes Fitzpatrick. On the Vikings ensuing drive, quarterback Ryan Barbarin throws deep over the middle, intending his pass for USC-commit Sebastian LaRue, but Austin Murrillo intercepts the pass, then loses his helmet but still wants to keep playing. By rule, the play is dead immediately, but Murrillo's actions fire up his team. Then in the 2nd quarter, from the 9 yard line. White finds junior Connor Wingenroth in the flat, who makes a NICE move to then waltz into the end zone. White was 12-of-19 for 167 yards and three touchdown passes in the game. Wingenroth then lined up at quarterback, faked to Antoine Holmes, then went up the middle, makes a move, then DIVES into the end zone to give Hart a three touchdown lead. Wingenroth ran for 103 yards in the game and now has over 500 yards rushing on the season. In the third quarter, with Hart now leading 34-7, sophomore Trent Irwin takes the punt at his own 41 yard line, finds a seaom on the right side then turns on the jets. Irwin is known as a great receiver but he showing off on special teams. A 59-yard punt return for a touchdown, Hart will stay No. 1 in the Northern Division with a 41-7 win over Santa Monica.
Drew Wolitarsky gets a lot of attention. He is now in his fourth year starting for the Canyon Cowboys at wide out, he's 6-3, 210 pounds, and I'm sure if you were to ask the coeds on campus they'd tell you he's a pretty good looking guy. Heck, maybe even Drew would agree. But what is getting the most attention is that he needed just 157 receiving yards to break Steve Smith's STATE record for a career. The Cowboys were hosting Steele Canyon, a team up from the eastern suburbs of San Diego. In the 1st quarter, Canyon quarterback Cade Apsay utilizes the play fake to run 23 yards for the score. Canyon led 13-0. Early in the 2nd quarter, Steele Canyon came back. Brandon Andrade connects with Larence Dickens on this 14-yard pass to draw the Cougars to within six. But the Cowboys answered. Apsay connects with Wolitarski from 14 yards out to spread the lead to 13 once again. Apsay completed 19-of 35 for 332 yards and 4 touchdowns in the game Later in the quarter, the Apsay to Wolitarski connection happens again, this time from 27 yards out. Wolitarski caught seven passes for 100 yards and 2 TDs. He now needs 50 yards to break the record.Apsay completed the scoring in the first half with this 18-yard strike to senior Brenden Stach to give the Cowboys a 27-14 lead at halftime. The Cowboys party SEEMED to get rolling in the third. First a 50-yard touchdown pass from Apsay to sophomore Liam Cabrera made it a 20-point lead for Canyon Cabrera caught 5 for 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Cougars came right back to show they were wanting to crash this party when Andrade connected with Dickens again, this time from 20 yards, to close the gap. But Canyon answered again. Speedy Domninic Pennucci bursts through the Cougars defense to run 53 yards for six. Pennucci finished with 119 yards on just 11 carries. The 20-point lead started to evaporate with this 51-yard pass from Andrade to Brandon Howard. The Cougars closed out on a 28-8 run to force overtime. No scores in extra time, so the Cowboys and the Cougars call it a draw at 49.
Moving over to Dr. Paul Priesz Stadium where the Valencia Vikings continued their annual series with the Loyola Cubs as the final test before each team enters their respective league play. With the Cubs leading 7-0 in the 1st quarter, a mishandled hand-off is recovered by the Vikings to end a Cubs drive. That led to this 45-yard Sean Murphy to Malik Townsend touchdown pass to even the score at 7. Murphy threw for over 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the game. Defense came up strong in the first half for the Vikings. Loyola quarterback Patrick Finnegan gets sacked by most of the Valencia defensive line. Later in the drive, the Cubs look to get on the board when Cameron Walker goes 20 yards for an apparent touchdown. But holding nullified the score. The Cubs were forced to try a 30-yard field goal, only to have it blocked by Townsend. The Vikings are thrilled at this point to go to the locker room tied at 7. Despite Michael Carter taking the second half kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, the Cubs rattle off 17 unanswered points in the second half to beat Valencia by 10 (24-14)
On the scoreboard, Leon Jacobs ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns, but that was the lone bright spot as Golden Valley got thumped by Simi Valley (44-12), and both Saugus and West Ranch were idle.
So the standings in the league as we have now finished all non-league play show Hart and Canyon as the only two teams to have an above-500 record, but remember the non-league schedule prepares a team for the five games that matter most. So that sets up the opening week of Foothill League football, and the Power Valencia and Valencia BMW Game of the Week will have the co-league champions from a year ago squaring off... the Saugus Centurions taking on the Valencia Vikings. AM-1220 will also be broadcasting the game live beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 Friday night. The No. 1 team in the division, Hart, will host the West Ranch Wildcats, and Drew Wolitarsky and the Canyon Cowboys will host the Golden Valley Grizzlies in a game that is sure to be packed with fans in anticipation of history being made.
In other high school action, Santa Clarita Christian blew out Southlands Christian (66-0). And in 8-man football, the Trinity Knights, ranked 10th in the STATE, DOMINATED Liberty Christian (68-6).
Turning to the college football scoreboard where the College of the Canyons Cougars travelled to Bakersfield to take on one of the best junior college football teams in the state, and the score showed it (45-7), and UCLA gets back in the top 25 with a convincing win over Colorado (42-14). USC was off and they play Utah this THURSDAY in Salt Lake City.
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports, and when we come back, it was the first action of Foothill League girls volleyball, and there WERE some surprises, and later, my co-host on SCV Today - Tami Edwards - continues with her golf lessons at Scratch Golf. Is she ever going to actually get on a REAL golf course? Stay tuned...

Welcome back to Inside Sports. A year ago the Saugus Centurions girls volleyball team was ranked in the top 10 of the CIF Southern Section divisional poll. They won league, advanced to the quarter-finals in the playoffs and had the best player in Santa Clarita two years running in Jaclyn Clark. But Clark has moved on to play for the Gators of San Francisco State. In 2012's league opener, the Centurions would have to battle against perennial league power Valencia, a team that had won the previous NINE league crowns. It was a good crowd at Valencia that got to witness the chase for Foothill League glory, and early on it was the defending champions in control. Centurions senior outside hitter Hannah Nua finds the empty court in the back of the Valencia defense for the kill. Nua leads this team with an average of 5.4 kills per set. Then it was senior setter Ashley Guthrie with the perfect set to Nua who hammers it home once again. Guthrie averages 21 assists per match. But the Vikings wrested control midway through the first game. Delaney Knudsen finds her little sister Lindsey Knudsen with a back set, who hammers down in front to get the kill A game 1 win meant momentum was on the Vikings shoulders, and they go on to defeat the defending champs in straight games
Moving over to Hart where the Indians had just beat the defending City Section champions Granada Hills in preparation of opening league play against a highly regarded West Ranch squad. The Indians won the first two games behind plays like this block from senior middle blocker Mariah Richberg. But then the Wildcats came back behind plays like this from middle blocker Sarah McGough, who taps down the over pass in the empty court. West Ranch won games 3 & 4. But with the help of a near capacity crowd at Hart, the Indians came back in game 5. Here Amy King gets a terrific set from Erin Indermill to register the kill. Hart wins in an upset, 3-2
Canyon went on the road to Golden Valley to open up with a win in league in straight games.
The Master's College is one of the best kept secrets in Santa Clarita. Few know the athletic prowess on the Placerita Canyon campus, but for those who DO know, they know what I know. No other college can claim four out of five fall teams ranked in the top 25 nationally, and three of those teams were in action this week. First to Bross Gym where the No. 13 Mustangs hosted the No. 5 Westmont Warriors Tuesday and came away with a four-game win. The Lady Mustangs followed that big win with three game sweeps of Embry Riddle on Friday and Arizona Christian on Saturday.
Moving out to the pitch where The Master's womens soccer team, ranked 23rd in NAIA Division 1, took on Biola in a thriller. Shea Richard scored both goals, including the game winner in overtime, to give the Mustangs the win.
The men's team was also in action on Reese Field as they hosted No. 17 Biola, with the Mustangs dropping a thrilling 1-0 match to the Eagles.
We're going to take a break and when we come back we are going to hit the links... well, Tami is going to hit the SIMULATED links of Scratch Golf.
(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports. Many of you are used to seeing me on the field, in the gym or on the court. But in the mornings here on SCVTV, I host a morning show that focusses on why Santa Clarita is such a great place to live, work and play. My co-host, Tami Edwards, has been taking up the game of golf, and for the last couple of months she has been going to Scratch Golf Center to learn the game. No better place to see how well she's doing than right here on Inside Sports.
(TAMI)
That's all the time we have for this edition of Inside Sports. This week we will see another Foothill League cross country meet, more girls golf and tennis matches, games 2 & 3 of Foothill League volleyball, and of course the beginning of league play in high school football. On top of all that will be plenty of The Master's College and Canyons athletics to keep everyone busy. If you can't get to a game or match, come back here next week and catch another edition of Inside Sports. We'll keep you caught up.
