Hi again everybody and welcome once again to another edition of Inside Sports. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to give you highlights of the record setting performance by Drew Wolitarsky at Canyon, plus the opening games of the Foothill League football season which is where the REAL season begins, the one that really matters. Plus college football, girls volleyball and the story of the team that won its first ever Foothill League match... the Golden Valley girls golf team. To be a starter at the high school football level, you have to be a good player. To start as an underclassman you have to be a player a little more special. To start as a FRESHMAN, a player most likely possesses a very unique ability. Drew Wolitarski not only started as a freshman but was anointed AT THE TIME as a player with the potential to be the greatest receiver to come out of the Santa Clarita Valley. Now Wolitarski can arguably be said to be one of the greatest receivers to come out of the football-rich state of California. Friday night at Harry Welch Stadium the Cowboys hosted Golden Valley in the opening game of the Foothill League, where Wolitarsky needed just 50 years to pass Steve Smith's state record for most receiving yards in a career. The same Steve Smith now playing for the St. Louis Rams in the NFL. It started simply enough with a touchdown pass, this one coming from 5 yards out from junior quarterback Cade Apsay. Then late in the 1st quarter, Wolitarsky takes this shuffle pass and does what he has done so well... run. The play goes for 20 yards. At this point he needed 25 more yards. In the 2nd quarter, Woli takes this 12-yard pass down to the one-yard line. The Cowboys would score. But the big play came with 7 and a half to play in the first half. Apsay to Wolitarsky across the middle for 21 yards. Then the celebration began. Congratulations and the game ball going to Drew Wolitarsky as he etches his name in the record books. On the night, Wolitarsky finished with 9 receptions for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the game. Two players later, he does it again only this time in spectacular fashion. A diving catch in the end zone from 37 yards out from his junior quarterback. Apsay finished the night 16-of 24 for 241 yards and four touchdowns. But this night didn't just belong to Wolitarsky. It was a coming out party for Myron McAfee as well. McAfee ran for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Cowboys win big over the Golden Valley Grizzlies. After the game we caught up with the new state record holder.

Over at Dr. Paul Priesz Stadium at Valencia High School is where SCVTV presented the Power Valencia and Valencia BMW Game of the Week... the two co-league champions from a year ago, the Saugus Centurions and the Valencia Vikings. And from the opening drive it was all Valencia. Off the play action fake, senior quarterback Sean Murphy hits Malik Townsend who dives into the end for the score completing a 79-yard drive. Then in the 2nd, Murphy goes across the middle to Nick Jones who takes it to the two yard line. Stone Jackson would punch it in to make it 14-0. Later the Centurions would threaten. Quarterback Chris Hamilton to Krishan Pierce who uses his speed to take it to the Vikings 27. Later in the drive the Centurions go for it on 4th and 8. Hamilton gets sacked by Joe Simili and the Vikings take over on downs. Saugus was 1-for-4 going for it on 4th down in the game. In the third quarter with the game well in hand for the Vikings, Murphy hits Jones in quadruple coverage from 32 yards out for the score. Nick Jones caught 9 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings cruise to an easy win (38-0)
In other Foothill League action, Hart sophomore quarterback Brady White completed 15 passes in a row and the Indians defense held the Wildcats to just 17 yards passing. Hart will certainly remain the No. 1 team in the Northern Division with their league-opening win over West Ranch. (49-6)
The Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals combined for 210 yards on the ground and quarterback Johnathan Saavedra completed 8-of-10 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown in a win over Kilpatrick (25-6)
And in 8-man, Trinity's Dakota Prochnow ran for 93 yards and threw for another 139 in a back and forth game, but the Knights came up short to Mustangs (lose to Mojave 29-20)
Turning to college football where the College of the Canyons Cougars played a wild one in Lancaster, taking it to double overtime where a blocked extra point proved the difference as the Cougars keep their chances of an above .500 season in tact. (62-61)
The Trojans climb two spots to No. 11 in the latest AP poll after their win Thursday night (38-28), and the Bruins drop out of the top 25 after a pounding by the Cal Bears. (43-17)
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports, and when we return we will look at Foothill League girls volleyball which is proving wilder than anyone thought going into the season, and later, the Golden Valley girls golf team does something it has NEVER done. That's all coming up on Inside Sports.
(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports. Girls volleyball is revealing a VERY competitive league this year. Evidence of that was the match on Thursday between the No. 6 ranked team in Division 1-A, the Valencia Vikings, and the 1-1 in league Canyon Cowboys. This match was VERY CLOSE and frankly could have gone either way. After a great stuff block, Valencia's Delaney Knudsen takes advantage of the over pass to register the point. The Cowboys showed their strength as Sayo Akao and Madison Regan combine to stuff the attempt by Valencia's Knudsen to take the point for the Cowboys. But then late in the third game, Sierra Sanchez takes advantage of her own great defense to get the kill, as the Vikings go to 3-0 in a three-game win.
At Golden Valley on Thursday, the Grizzlies showed their support for breast cancer awareness month by wearing pink uniforms in their match against Hart. The Indians controlled the first game, getting an ace here from libero Katie Baker. Golden Valley came right back on the next serve by showing they have some power as Katie Nicholson registers the kill. Later, one of the best rallies we've seen all year. Just sit back and watch this one. Hart goes on to win in four games to remain undefeated in league.
(Hart wins 3-1 over Golden Valley)
Wednesday saw girls tennis action at Valencia, and with Hart undefeated and sitting comfortably in first place, the second and third-place teams saw action when the Vikings hosted West Ranch. The Vikings singles dominated their matches, going 8-1 against the Wildcats. Brigitta Benitez and Sabina West went 3-0 in their matches for Valencia. On the doubles side, West Ranch came out on top 5-4, led by the team of MacKenzie Lyle and Amanda Wilkinson that went 3-0 on the day. The Vikings improve to 4-1, with their only loss being to the Hart Indians.
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports and as we do I want to introduce you to Niko Lachman, the Wendy's of Santa Clarita Student Athlete of the Week.

(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports. Golden Valley athletics has faced an uphill battle since opening its doors in 2004. The basketball team claimed back-to-back league titles in 2009 and 2010, and the boys cross country team claimed not only a league championship a year ago, but a CIF crown as well. But for most Grizzly teams, the bottom half of the league is where they have been feeding. Girls golf was no exception. But with 2012 comes a new look on the links for the Grizzlies.
(GV Golf)
The fourth league match of the season, this time at Elkins Ranch in Fillmore, will happen (WHEN). I have a feeling with the added confidence from Wednesday's win, the Grizzlies will be as competitive as ever at a difficult golf course. Well that's all the time we have for today's show. Thanks for being here everybody and we will see you again next time.
