Hi again everybody and welcome once again to another edition of Inside Sports. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to give you highlights of high school football, college football and soccer, girls volleyball, golf and tennis, and a feature on the four teams at The Master's College that are each ranked in the top 25 nationally in their sport. Let's start with the game you saw right here on SCVTV Friday night, the West Ranch Wildcats hosting the Valencia Vikings. And from the opening drive it looked like it was the sequel to last week's Sean Murphy Nick Jones show. This one was good for 37 yards. Later in the drive Murphy connected with Malik Townsend from 26 yards out for the score. The Wildcats first possession ended when Spencer Hixon steps in front of Garret Mouw's pass for the interception. It was the first of two picks for the Valencia junior. On Murphy's first pass of the ensuing possession he hits Jones for the 33-yard strike to give the Vikings a two touchdown lead. Murphy completed passes to nine different receivers in the game and four touchdowns. At the close of the first half, Murphy places the ball perfectly into the arms of Ethan Yoo for the 20-yard touchdown. Murphy finished 19-of-25 for 299 yards. In the third quarter, Cole Murphy teed it up from 50 yards out and made it with plenty of room to spare. That brought the Vikings to 45. The one bright spot for the Wildcats came on their next possession when Mouw hit Zahr Lytle in the flat and the senior did the rest. 80 yards for the touchdown, but the night belonged to Valencia as they cruise to an easy victory. (55-7)
Over at Cougar Stadium the Centurions were hosting the Canyon Cowboys. Saugus needed a big rebound from last week's shut out to the Vikings, and Canyon wanted to keep on rolling behind the new California record holder, Drew Wolitarsky. The Cowboys got on the board first when quarterback Cade Apsay hit Brenden Stach down the sideline who eludes the tackle nd gets into the end zone. Saugus though would answer. Marc Langfords goes 14 yards to get in the end zone, and after Angie Weiner's point after, the score was knotted at 7. The Cowboys got a scoring pass from Apsay to Liam Cabrera and before the close of the half they got another one, this one from 560 yards out to give Canyon a 21-7 halftime lead. Later in the fourth with Canyon now leading 35-14, Apsay would again hit cabrera, and even though it was close, the officials gave the 11-yard touchdown the nod. Cabrera caught six passes for 102 yards and three touchdowns. But the news wasn't all good for Canyon as Wolitarsky, Stach and offensive lineman Brandon Granados went out with injuries, with Granados being the most serious. Canyon gets the win.
In other Foothill League action, Hart's Trent Irwin caught seven passes for 120 yards and a touchdown as the Indians win their sixth in a row and no doubt stay on top of the Northern Division rankings (56-14). The Indians will be in action this Friday on SCVTV in a very special night for Hart football as the Indians will retire the No. 17 of former Hart quarterback Matt Moore in a ceremony at halftime. You'll be able to watch the ceremony, in addition to the Indians taking on the Centurions, at 11 o'clock following SCV Newsbreak, right here on SCVTV.
As we look at the standings, there is clearly a division between the haves and the have nots in the league. And remember, the top three teams automatically advance to the playoffs.
In other high school football action, Trinity Classical Academy had seven different running backs combined for 146 yards as the Knights get their first Heritage League win after Milken called it quits early in the fourth quarter. (51-0) The Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals had the week off.
Turning to college football where the College of the Canyons Cougars were looking to make it two in a row and wanting to keep their chances of an above-.500 season in tact when they hosted the undefeated Ventura Pirates Saturday night at Cougar Stadium. In the first quarter with Ventura already leading 13-0, Cougars quarterback Ryan Kasdorf hits Kwasi Washington from 17 yards out to give COC their first points of the game. Then in the second quarter with Ventura now up by 16, Kasdorf finds Drew Phillips in the flat for a 7-yard TD pass to cut the deficit to nine. The Cougars brought it to within two when Andre David punched it in from five yards out. And then with just 11seconds to play in the half, former Golden Valley star Earl Johnson runs it in from the five to give the Cougars the lead at halftime. After the Pirates returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, Shane Drozdowski hauls in the 18-yarder from Kasdorf. The Cougars had 545 yards of total offense but turned the ball over six times as they come up short in what was a GREAT game. Afterward, Head Coach Garret Tujague talked about how well the Cougars played against a VERY good team.

On the college scoreboard, the Trojans got 155 yards on the ground from Silas Redd to come away with a win (24-14), and Brett Hundley passed for 183 yards and a touchdown, AND had 68 yards rushing and a touchdown as the Bruins shut down Utah for the win at the Rose Bowl. (21-14).
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports, and when we return we will look at the key match that closed the first half of the league season in Foothill League girls volleyball, and later, four of the five Fall sports played at The Master's College are ranked nationally. That's all coming up on Inside Sports.
(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports. Foothill League girls volleyball has become very very interesting. Three teams are on top of the league -- Hart, Valencia and West Ranch -- with championship hopes lying in the balance. Two of those teams took on each other, the two teams many believed would be the two battling it out for the league title. Off to Valencia we go as the Wildcats came in to a packed house to take on the Vikings, who apparently think highly of volleyball coach Ray Sanchez to put his face on sticks. In the first game the Vikings used the crowd to their advantage, after a GREAT rally, one you would expect between two great teams with great defense, setting and hitting, Delaney Knudsen gets set by her sister Lindsey to register the kill. Game one to Valencia. But West Ranch brought support too, and with plays like this from Alexis Clewes who hammers the point off the back set, the Wildcats were able to come back to win game two. West Ranch continued with the momentum... Here Amanda Deeterlee not only provides the defense but the offense as well. The Wildcats win the final three games to get the four-game win over Valencia.
Earlier in the week the Vikings defeated Hart, so after the first half of the season there is a three-way tie at the top with all three teams beating up on each other. The next two weeks will be a lot of fun at the net.
Turning now to girls golf where league match No. 4 took place at Elkins Ranch in Fillmore. West Ranch re-asserted itself as the top team with a convincing 20-stroke penalty over Hart, with Golden Valley and Valencia each a stroke behind the other. So a look at the standings going into this week's final match, the two-day Newhall Cup at TPC-Valencia, shows West Ranch with the 26-stroke season-long advantage, but look at that battle for second between Hart and Golden Valley -- all tied after 36 holes of team golf. The Newhall Cup gets underway on Wednesday. By the way, Canyon had no scores for the first two league matches which is why they are blank.
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports and as we do I want to introduce you to Trevor Noble, the Wendy's of Santa Clarita Student Athlete of the Week.

(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports. There are a few Santa Claritans who know all about the great athletes who spend four years at The Master's College and then move on to professional careers. Jerry Owens was a second round pick by the THEN Montreal Expos, Mike Penberthy played basketball for the Lakers, and most recently, Charlie Gillies was chosen in the tenth round of Major League Baseball's First Year Player Draft by the Detroit Tigers. But it's what is happening this Fall that has many thinking the Mustangs are worth watching.
(TMC Feature)
The fourth league match of the season, this time at Elkins Ranch in Fillmore, will happen (WHEN). I have a feeling with the added confidence from Wednesday's win, the Grizzlies will be as competitive as ever at a difficult golf course. Well that's all the time we have for today's show. Thanks for being here everybody and we will see you again next time.

And one final thought, if you think that just because the NAIA is not the NCAA and is therefore providing a lower quality college athletic competition, you would be wrong. A case in point... When Cal Baptist men's basketball played in the NAIA, it never finished higher than fourth in the Golden State Athletic Conference. Two years ago it made the jump to NCAA Division 2 and WON its conference championship in the very first year. Was it a different team? No. Cal Baptist played different competition. The sports played at The Master's College are comparable to lower division 1, higher division 2 in the NCAA. THAT'S how good the competition is over in Placerita Canyon. If you are a fan, do yourself a favor and go to a game at The Master's College. Well that's all the time we have for Inside Sports today. Thanks for being here everyone, and we'll see you again next time.
