Hi again everybody and welcome once again to another edition of Inside Sports. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to give you highlights of the final week of high school football's regular season, a champion crowned in girls volleyball, and a preview of the two basketball teams at The Master's College that were both in the national top 25 conversation a year ago. But we are going to start today with the game that would determine football's Foothill League champion, the undefeated in league Valencia Vikings against the 0-4 Golden Valley Grizzlies. Valencia junior Nick Jones starts things with this 50-yard reception down to the 5-yard line. It would set up a touchdown run by James Berkley. Later in the second quarter, Sean Murphy passes to freshman Michael Pittman for the 7-yard touchdown reception. Murphy was 9-for-9 for 233 yards and 3 touchdowns while playing just the first half. Valenica's defense would come up big as well as senior Anthony Costleigh picks off Golden Valley quarterback Chase Lewis and returns it 28 yards for the pick six. Right before the end of the half, the Vikings Jay Jay Wilson had the biggest play of the night... a 53-yard bomb from Murphy. Wilson had two catches in his half of play. In the 2nd half Golden Valley tries to make something happen as Robert Phillips passes it to Chase Lewis over the middle. Lewis gets tripped up from behind by Berkley, but not before a 48-yard gain. Lewis was shaken up after the play, but he would later return. The night, though, belonged to the Vikings.

Now the Vikings host Paso Robles in the first round, a team that went 6-4 and finished 4th in the PAC-7 League. (49-0)
In the game you saw right here on SCVTV Friday night, the two teams battling for second place in league, the Canyon Cowboys against the Hart Indians. Early on it was all Hart. On 4th and 14 from the Canyon 19, Brady White gets rushed, scrambles, and then finds Trent Irwin in the end zone for athe 19-yard touchdown pass. On the next Canyon drive, quarterback Cade Apsay gets picked off by Austin Murrillo who returns it 39 yards for the score. The Indians were up 14-0 midway thru the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Cowboys would get on the board. Domninic Penucci takes the toss, turns on the jets to get around the edge for the 4-yard touchdown run. Then in the third, Canyon ties the game when Apsay finds Drew Wolitarsky on the 12-yard strike. Wolitarsky finished with 7 catches for 90 yards and needs just 3 receptions this Friday to tie Steve Smith's all-time reception mark in the state of California. With less than two minutes to play and Hart's back against the wall, Brady White's pass gets tipped and picked off by Isreal Cabrera. It was one of two interceptions White threw on the night. Boney Rojas then lines up for the 17-yard field goal with one second left, and the Canyon Cowboys win a thriller 17-14, get the students rushing the field, and get second place in the Foothill League giving them a home game in the first round of the playoffs.
Over at Valencia the West Ranch Wildcats hosted the Saugus Centurions at Dr. Paul Priesz Stadium. On the opening drive Saugus Quarterback Chris Hamilton finds the speedy Dakota Taylor cutting right down the middle for a 31-yard completion. That play set up Reid Rupe's 15-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 Saugus. In the 2nd quarter, a similar play but this time Hamilton finds Kevin Lee breaking down the middle to the 11-yard line to set up Marc Langford for an easy score. Hamilton finished 17-of-22 for 229 yards and a touchdown. On the ensuing drive for west ranch, Zahr Lyttle on the handoff breaks to the right side, stays in bounds, and into the endzone. The 11-yard run cuts the Centurion lead to 7. Moving on to the third quarter with the score tied at 14, Ried Rupe takes the handoff, 15 yards down to the 1 to setup Hamilton for a TD plunge to put the Centurions back in the lead. The Centurions would add some insurance with this 19-yard field goal by Angie Weiner to seal a 24-14 victory for the Centurions and finish off their season with a 2-3 league record, and HOPES for the playoffs. Well as it turns out, those playoff hopes for the Centurions were dashed on Sunday when the four at-large berths for the Northern Division went elsewhere. So the Centurions season, along with that of the Wildcats and Grizzlies, is over. (17-14)

In other high school football action, Jonathan Saavedra threw for three touchdowns and Derek Lewis ran for four more as the Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals win big over Animo Leadership, yet despite a 7-3 overall record and a third-place finish in the San Joaquin League, the Cardinals did NOT make the playoffs. (54-0), and in 8-man, Trinity wins big in their first round playoff game against Price. The Knights next face Cornerstone Christian in round two. (71-6)
Turning to college football where, for the third time this season, College of the Canyons's Dan Vear blocked an extra point to help lift the Cougars over Cerritos. Canyons will close out the regular season Saturday at home against Allan Hancock (38-36) The USC Trojans and the Oregon Ducks had an offensive explosion, but the Ducks prevailed (62-51). Johnathan Franklin became the Bruins all-time career rushing leader after gaining 162 yards against the Wildcats in a big UCLA win (66-10).
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports, and when we return the league championship in girls volleyball was decided on the court and runners took to the streets on Sunday in the (how many) Santa Clarita Marathon. That's all coming up on Inside Sports.
(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports. Foothill League girls volleyball has been very competitive this year, so it was fitting that it came down to two of the top teams playing in the final game to decide the championship. West Ranch hosted the Valencia Vikings with the Vikings needing a win for the outright championship and West Ranch needing a win to share the title with the Vikings. In game one it was West Ranch, behind plays like this from Williams, that gave the Wildcats the win. Game two saw the Vikings come back when Delaney Knudsen sets her younger sister Lindsey for the kill. It's 1-1 after two games. West Ranch comes back in game three behind the power hitting of Alexis Clewis. The Wildcats take game three. The Vikings roar back in the fourth. Delaney Knudsen takes the perfect set, hammers it down, to help give the Vikings the game four win. So it goes to game 5. First team to 15 and winning by two gets the match victory. Valencia's delaney Knudsen blasts down the Wildcat over-pass, and the Vikings take game 5 15-11 to go to 9-1 on the season and the league championship. With the loss, West Ranch drops to third behind Hart.
The Santa Clarita Marathon was held on Sunday, and with the New York Marathon being cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy, many of THOSE participants flew west to Santa Clarita. Over 2900 runners took part in the annual race that saw participants winding thru Valencia, Newhall, Canyon Country and Saugus to complete the 26.2 miles. The men's winner was a local man, Jeff Jackson, a former NAIA national champion when he competed for The Master's College. Jackson completed the race in two hours, 30 minutes and 52 seconds. Afterward, he said he had just decided to run the race a couple weeks ago.

On the women's side Guatemalan Petra Mullers took home the prize in a time of 3 hours, 8 minutes and 55 seconds. She credited her strategy developed by her coach for the win.

For a couple of decades now, Canyon Aquatics has been producing champion swimmers. 2000 Olympic gold medalist Anthony Ervin mastered his strokes with the club, as have scores who have gone on to swim in college and the Olympic Trials. Their head coach, Jeff Conwell, has decided to move on to another club in Palm Springs. Tigran Martirosian

(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports. The Master's College basketball programs are two of the best in the NAIA country. Both teams were nationally ranked last season and have most certainly bolstered already strong rosters.

That's going to do it for us today on Inside Sports. Thanks for being here everyone. We will see you again next time.
