Hi again everybody and welcome once again to another edition of Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to give you highlights of the final football game played in the valley, the announcement of a major sporting event coming BACK to the Santa Clarita, and an introduction to the new coach for the co-defending Foothill League boys basketball champions -- the Canyon Cowboys. But for our lead story, make it seven in a row. The Saugus girls cross country team won the CIF state championship Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. Seven... Consecutive... California State Cross Country Championships. Sophomore Samantha Ortega was the runner-up in the Division 2 race, posting a time of 17:33 on the 5-K course, with Heidi Hoslet, Abigail Frankian, Katie Huntington and Olivia Altieri all finishing in the top 50. Golden Valley’s Bianca Tinoco, competing as an individual, finished in seventh with a time of 18:09. The Saugus boys team finished second in the Division 2 state meet, with A.J. Yarnall setting a school record over the 5-K course in 15 minutes and 10 seconds. He finished second in the race, one second behind Bryan Fernandez of Dos Pueblos. Nolan Del Valle of Golden Valley finished 15th in a time of 15:41.
Friday night the Valencia Vikings hosted the Palos Verdes Sea Kings in the semi finals of the CIF Southern Section Northern Division football playoffs. The same Sea Kings that knocked the Hart Indians out of the playoffs a week earlier.

So with the last football team out of competition, the 2012 All-Foothill League team has been released and to no one's surprise, Valencia quarterback Sean Murphy has been named the Player of the Year. Murphy threw 38 touchdown passes for the league champions, breaking Michael Herrick's single-season touchdown record. Canyon junior quarterback Cade Apsay was named Offensive Player of the Year, Valencia linebacker Anthony Costleigh was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year, and the Lineman of the Year went to Juan Rodriguez from Canyon. Four players from the Vikings were named to the first team offense, followed by three players each from Canyon and Hart, with Saugus and West Ranch each placing a pair of players. Valencia's Cole Murphy was the top kicker in the league. The first team all-defense had four more from the Vikings, three from Canyon, two each from Hart and Saugus, and one from West Ranch. Hart's Griffin Scott was the league's top punter. For the entire team, including the second teams and honorable mentions, go to SCV News dot com and click on the sports tab.
Keeping on the theme of All-Foothill League, girls volleyball has announced their list of the best, and on top of that list is Valencia Delaney Knudsen. The senior (STATS). The First Team All-Foothill league had Katie Baker and Kathryn Cambra from Hart, Saugus's Ashley Guthrie, Sierra Sanchez and Hayley Knapp from Valencia, Sarah McGough and Alexis Clewis of West Ranch. The Second Team has Lauryn Underwood, Amy King, Erin Indermill, Hannah Nua, Kellie Kleszcz, Lindsey Knudsen and Carly Carapella. Honorable Mentions are Mackenzie Thurston, Katie Nicholson, Chase Tengberg, Julianna Dole, Kaity Uythoven and Haley Lind. The Vikings were the league champions this year.
And keeping on the theme of volleyball as The Master's womens volleyball team, finishing the regular season ranked 6th in the country, went to Sioux City, Iowa for the NAIA National Volleyball Championships. But unfortunately it didn't go quite so well as the Mustangs lost their first two out of three in pool play, still managed to get into the single elimination round of 16, where they lost their first match against No. 10 Oklahoma Baptist 3-1. Still, the Mustangs finish with a record of 27-8, their most successful season ever.
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports, and when we return the high school basketball season is underway, plus a world-class event will once again be coming to Santa Clarita. That's all coming up on Inside Sports.
(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports. High School basketball is getting underway in Santa Clarita with the first month or so usually devoted to various tournaments around the Southland. In girls basketball, a decade-old season tip-off tradition has become the High Five Tournament hosted by Valencia High School. Three Foothill League teams were featured in this year's tournament, including defending co-league champs Saugus. The Centurions faced the Knight Hawks out of Palmdale, and things started well for Saugus. Alicia Ferrante sends a pass down to Justice Bennett who goes in for the lay-up for two of her ten points. Later in the quarter, senior Rachel Eaton drains the jumper for two of her eight points. Saugus had an 11-8 1st quarter lead. In the second quarter, Eaton knocks the ball away, gets the pass down to Alexa Ferrante who lays it in for two of her team-high 12 points. Saugus had a two-point halftime lead. But in the third the Hawks exploded. Led by Dreshawna Jennings, the Hawks out-scored the Centurions 19-8 in the quarter, pulling away for a 60-43 win over Saugus. The Hart Indians then took the floor to play the Burroughs Indians and in the first quarter it was all Burroughs. Led by Asia Shellmire, who scored 19 points in the game, the Indians out of Burbank jumped to a 13-point lead. But the Newhall Indians came back. Sophomore Breze Kimball gets two of her 12 points on a lay-up off a turnover. Then, after a missed free throw, Kimball gets the ball to Nikki Aganian who hits the jumper from the paint for two of her team-high 15 points. Aganian also hit 11-of-14 free throws. But Hart could never overcome that slow start and lose 58-53.
The host Vikings had a different tournament. They took on the Fairview Knights out of Boulder, Colorado, using their athleticism to overcome a height disadvantage. Here Talia Roth gets an assist from Hi-Lea Mitchell for two of her 22 points in the game. Later in the second, Jennifer Anumba drives, dishes to Roth who feeds Kay-Lea Summerlin behind the arc, draining the 3-pointer. Summerlin finished with 7. In the second half, Roth misses, fights for the rebound, gets fouled by the shot counts. Roth had 10 rebounds to go with her 22 points. On the free throw attempt, she misses, but Anumba is there for the rebound and the putback. The Vikings go on to win the game AND the tournament to start 4-0 on the season.
The Amgen Tour of California is coming back to Santa Clarita. Mayor Pro Tem Bob Kellar announced today stage three of the eight-stage, 750-mile tour, considered America's largest and most prestigious professional road cycling stage race, will finish in Santa Clarita on May 14th, and stage four will start here on May 15th.
(Kellar)
The world's top cyclists, including past winners of the Tour de France, will compete. Instead of traveling from Northern California south, the 2013 tour will originate outside San Diego in Escondido and end north of San Francisco in Santa Rosa.
The 2013 College of the Canyons Hall of Fame class is still more than a month from being inducted, but what they will now have is a permanent place to rest their achievement. On Thursday the college unveiled its brand new Athletic Hall of Fame Wall in the lobby of the Cougar Cage.
(Dianne Van Hook)
The Hall of Fame was started in 2005 and honors individuals, teams, coaches and administrators who made an impact for the school. A new class is inducted every two years.
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports and as we do I want to introduce you to Ace Eichten, the Wendy's of Santa Clarita Student Athlete of the Week.
(Student Athlete of the Week)
(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports.
After 12 years as the head boys basketball coach at Canyon High School, Chad Phillips stepped aside last season after capturing a share of his third Foothill League championship. His replacement? A former private investigator and six-year assistant coach with Cowboys basketball, Sean DeLong.
(Sean-On being named head coach)
With Phillips staying on campus as a teacher, DeLong gets to talk basketball with him on a daily basis. Yet DeLong, a former player at Canyon, does bring his own style to the head coaching job.
(Sean)
DeLong has to deal with the losses of two of the game's most dynamic players last year, league MVP Coley Apsay and record-breaking scorer Clay Kasdorf. The team is senior heavy but with little varsity experience.
(Sean)
The success of this team may very well come down to the play of junior captain and returning varsity starter Dean Hendrix-Davis.
(Sean) (Dean)
But of course, one player cannot carry a basketball team alone.
(Sean)
Coming off a share of the league championship and three consecutive 20-plus win seasons, DeLong is realistic when it comes to predicting the upcoming season.
(Sean)
ON DAVE
Canyon does not have a lot of size, but they make up for that with an emphasis on defense and athleticism. In the first three games, the Cowboys have only allowed an average of 45 points per game, winning two of those games.
That's going to do it for us today on Inside Sports. Thanks for being here everyone. We will see you again next time.
