Hi again everybody and welcome once again to another edition of Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to give you highlights of some amazing basketball, both college and high school, introduce you to the College of the Canyons mens basketball program, and a look at the co-defending Foothill League boys basketball team, the West Ranch Wildcats. But we are going to start with breaking news as A big trade in major league baseball has two former Hart pitchers at the center of it. The Tamp Bay Rays have traded Jamie Shields to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for Mike Montgomery. The deal is part of a seven-player trade. Shields has been a double-digit winner with the Rays in each of the last six years and is coming off a 15-game season. Montgomery was just added to the Royals 40-man roster and is considered one of their top prospects.
Turning to high school basketball where the Canyon Cowboys hosted the 13th Annual Canyon Classic Tournament. And the host team started their tournament against the St. Genevieve Valients, and they also started with the hot shooting of sophomore Ben Taufahema, who hits the first of four 3-pointers in the first half. Park Mackenzie makes the pass to Dean Hendrix-Davis who makes a nice post move for two points of what would be a 12 - 0 run to start the game. Linwood Foy then comes up with the steal, passes it to Mark Chin for the layup to end the run. Chin finished with a game-high 26 points. Later in the half, Taufahema grabs the rebound and takes it coast to coast for the nice layup off the glass. Canyon up 42 - 20 at the half. In the 2nd half, the Valients Joshua Fuglsang blocks Park Mackenzie, but Marc Cabrera comes up with the ball and lays it in for two of his 16 points in the game. The Valients start to make a come back as Mark Chin takes advantage of Canyon's sloppy play by Canyon, and takes it to the basket for the "and 1". The Valients got to within 5 points after trailing by as many as 22. But Canyon regrouped as Mark Bell gets the steal and passes it up to Marc Cabrera for the easy bucket and the Cowboys hold on to win to get to the semi-finals. (67 - 57)
Saugus also got to the semi's where they played the Highland Bulldogs. Highland wasted no time as Carlos Hall steals it away and passes it up to Davonte Cleveland for the easy lay up, part of a 6-0 Bulldogs start to the game. Then the Centurions got hot. Nick Olinn finds Amir Mirtabatabaie for the "and 1" lay up that would spark a 19 - 5 run in the 2nd quarter. Then, Jacob Tobon finds a wide open Garrett Harding for the 3-pointer as Saugus goes into the half with a 23 - 14 lead. In the 2nd half, Saugus senior Chris Lockwood finds Zach Garlitos cutting to the hoop for the basket. Going into the 4th quarter Highland trailed by 13 and was looking to make a come back. Charles Dixon-Brady drops a 3-pointer to cut into the lead. He would finish with a game-high 17 points. But then Olinn sets up Mirtabatabaie once again to pull away down the stretch as Saugus clinches a spot in the championship (60 - 43).
The fans were ready for the other semi-final between the Canyon Cowboys and the Grant Lancers. Early on the Lancers were putting the pressure on, but Canyon's Mark Bell comes up with the ball, drives, spins, and gets fouled on the and 1 lay up. In the 2nd quarter Bell finds Devin Baldwin for the fast break lay up which sparked a 14 - 3 run. Defense may be the card for the Cowboys this season as Marc Cabrera gets the steal and the lay-up for two of his team-high 16 points. Then before the close of the half, Bell feeds Ben Taufahema for his 2nd 3-pointer of the game and the Cowboys go to the locker room with a two-point lead. As time was winding down in the third, Bell drove to the basket and passed it off to Cabrera for a 3 at the buzzer and the Cowboys go into the 4th quarter with a 5-point edge and the momentum. With under 2 minutes to go, Grant down by 5, Daleshaun Jackson hits a clutch 3 to pull within 2 points. A made free throw and the Cowboys held a 3-point lead with 2.8 seconds left. One last chance for Grant as Jackson throws up a prayer that comes up short and the Cowboys win a close one and advance to the finals (53-50).
So two Foothill League teams go into Saturday's championship game, a game neither team wants to play a month before league begins. But... It IS a championship game. In the first half, Saugus senior Chris Lockwood drives to the hoop for 2 of his ten points. But the Cowboys Marc Cabrera hit four 3-pointers in the first half on his way to 14. This game, tho, was won and lost in the second half. In the 4th quarter, Dawe with the miss. Matt Edwards saves the ball from going out of bounds, tips it to Cabrera who passes behind him to Dean Hendrix-Davis for the lay in. With about 5 mins left in the game, Devin Baldwin finds Ben Taufahema for the game tying 3! On the Cowboys next possession, Cabrera drives down the lane, dumps it to a wide open Edwards with the baseline jumper to take the lead. Taufahema displayed great Canyon defense with a steal, splits the D for the lay up as the Cowboys go up by five with 1:42 to go. With 35 seconds to play, Nick Olinn off the turnover tips the ball to Ashburn who he lays it off the glass. Then with 10.6 seconds to play and Canyon leading by two, Cabrera makes the second of two free throws to make it a three-point lead. Saugus is out of timeouts. Olinn puts up the three to tie it... ehhh... Mirtabatabaie puts the shot back up but time expired as the Cowboys won their 4th Annual Canyon Classic Championship. (43-42)
Canyon head coach Sean DeLong knew it wasn't pretty but a win and a championship trophy belongs to the Cowboys.

We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports, and when we return the high school basketball season is underway, plus a world-class event will once again be coming to Santa Clarita. That's all coming up on Inside Sports.

Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. West Ranch boys basketball did something last season no other Wildcats hoops team had ever done before win a Foothill League championship. And in all fairness it was shared with the Canyon Cowboys. What makes it even more amazing is it was won by a first-year head coach the UBER-energetic Shant Bicakci. The bulls-eye will clearly be on the Wildcats's back this year as they return 10 varsity players, one of the leading scorers in league in Kevin Harris, and the Player of the Year Ako Kaluna.
(Shant on his returning players)
The Wildcats finished 17-11 last year, 8-2 in league. They averaged over 70 points a game, 71.5 in league. They made it to the quarter-finals of the Division 1-A playoffs before losing a heart-breaker to Mission Viejo. Despite returning all those players that have big game experience, this year's Wildcat squad will be different.
(Shant-"I think we're a lot deeper...")
Ako Kaluna is a 6-8, 250-pound BEAST of a reigning player of the year. Last year he averaged over 16 points and 11 boards a game, and even made 70 percent of his free throws. Just last week he did this in Santa Monica.
(Show broken backboard)
Kevin Harris averaged over 17 points a game, shot 45 percent from the field and nearly 80 percent from the line.
(Shant-"There's no secret...")
(Ako-"I expect no less..."
Of course, two players do not a basketball team make. Seniors Kyle Williams, Zach Nuttal and Cody Sanders, and sophomore point guard Ryan Beddo are all expected to make contributions to the success of the Wildcats.
(Shant on Williams, Nuttal, Sanders and Beddo)
The Wildcats have already opened up the 2012-2013 campaign 4-1 and are ranked 18th in all of Southern California by the Los Angeles Times.
The winter sports polls for the CIF Southern Section this week has the Saugus girls soccer team ranked No. 2 in division 2. The Centurions have not given up a goal in their first three matches of the season. Santa Clarita Christian girls are ranked 10th in Division 7. The Cardinals are 1-1 so far. And on the boys side, the Hart Indians are in the No. 8 spot after an impressive 3-0 start with wins over Moorpark, Westlake and Quartz Hill.
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports and as we do I want to introduce you to Kevin Lee, the Wendy's of Santa Clarita Student Athlete of the Week.

Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. The Master's College mens basketball player, Jason Logan, has already shown the ability to make highlights in every game he is in. But Thursday night at Bross Gym on the campus of The Master’s College may be the best yet. The 6-3 forward from Spartanburg, South Carolina was trailing behind Devin Dyer after Dyer made a steal and went the length of the court. Dyer’s attempt at a dunk bounded off the rim. That’s when Logan sailed through the air, grabbed the ball and punctuated the play with his own slam. Logan finished with 13 points in the game, eight rebounds and one incredible highlight. The Master’s defeated La Sierra 99-58 to go to 8-3 on the season.
Mens basketball has also begun at College of the Canyons. Tigran Martirosyan of Cougar News reports.
