Hi again everybody and welcome once again to another edition of Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to give you previews of the Valencia and Golden Valley boys basketball teams, plus highlights and scores of games played in the Santa Clarita Valley. Let's start with girls high school basketball as the defending Foothill League champions, and fifth ranked in CIF Canyon Cowboys took on the Highland Bulldogs. Off the miss by Highland, good hustle by Marissa Schwimmer, who passes it up to Alia Mccoy for the and 1 fast break lay up. More fast break points as Monica Friedl dished it off to Schwimmer for 2. Bulldogs then showed confusion on the inbounds, allowing Mccoy to get the steal and assist off Leena Schultz's easy bucket. Highland's Ashley Kelsick shows good hands with the steal. She takes it all the way for the easy deuce. She would finish with 23 points. In the second half, Mccoy, surrounded by Bulldogs, finds an open Jaya Schultz for 2. Schwimmer then gets in on the assist action to Mccoy, who shows the strong post move to get the shot. McCoy would finish with a game-high 27 points. Alia then returns the favor as she finds Schwimmer cutting through the lane to lay it in for 2 as the Cowboys cruise past the Bulldogs (78-43).
In their first game back since winning the Canyon Classic Championship, the Canyon boys team faced off against the visiting Santa Clara Saints. The Saints came out strong as Armen Momin got the and 1 basket, part of a 9-1 opening run for Santa Clara. But then Canyon took over. Canyon Classic MVP Marc Cabrera drives to the hoop for the lay-up. Then in his 1st game back since coming off an injury, Park Mackenzie got the bounce for the and one bucket that sparked a 20 - 3 run to end the half. Cowboys led 25 - 19. The second half started with ood ball movement by Canyon as Dean Hendrix-Davis got the wide open shot. Then displaying the pick n roll, Ben Taufahema dished it off to Hendrix-Davis for the lay in. The Saints felt the pressure as the Cowboys come up with the steal, finishing with a Cabrera fast break score. Down by 12 late, Jones drove to the hole for 2. He would finish with a team high 16 points. Cowboys defense tho was too much for the Saints as Cabrera sealed the deal scoring a game high 17 points as the Cowboys win their 5th consecutive game.
Taking a look at the standings with league about three weeks away and we see a very strong showing by five of the six teams in their non-league schedule. In fact all five of those teams are ranked anywhere from 12th to 3rd in their respective CIF divisions. And yes, I did say divisions. Unlike football, the six teams making up the Foothill League are in four different divisions, which for basketball is based on individual school enrollment rather than the league as a unit. So yes, it is possible to have multiple CIF champions come out of the Foothill League. League play gets underway on January 8th with SCVTV televising both boys and girls games. Go to SCVNews.com for our television schedule. We're going top take a break here on Inside Sports and when we return we are going to preview the Valencia boys basketball team, and later we introduce you to the new coach at Golden Valley looking to turn the fortunes around for the former two-time league champion. That's all coming up on Inside Sports.
(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. If there is one team in boys Foothill League basketball that has been consistently good for the last decade it's the Valencia Vikings. The team has won 21 or more games in six of the last 11 years and five league championships. They made the playoffs 11 straight years and hold an SCV record nine straight years with a playoff win... except last year, when the Vikings, despite getting 15 wins, lost their last four games, finished fifth in league and out of the post-season. Every year is different, but the one consistency has been head coach Rocket Collins, who says this year's Vikings have one sizable difference from past squads.
(Rocket-"They play with a lot of compassion...")
This year the Vikings have opened up 7-1. According to Coach Collins, there isn't one player or one reason for the early success.
(Rocket-"Uhhhh a little bit of everything...")
Jaleel Howard broke an ankle in the fourth game last season as a sophomore. Despite nursing a new injury this year, Howard is expected to be a go-to guy for the Vikings.
(Rocket-"He's a natural-born leader...")
(Jaleel-"It was hard sitting out last year...")
Collins is also expecting outside production from seniors Riley Honaker and Garrett Mike.
(Rocket-"Honaker is just a go getter...")
Rocket-"Garrett Mike...")
The key for Valencia success?
(Rocket-"Just us doing what we need to do...")
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports and as we do I want to introduce you to Jake Lambirth, the Wendy's of Santa Clarita Student Athlete of the Week.
(Student Athlete of the Week)
(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. For the third time in the last four years, the Golden Valley boys basketball team has a new coach. Chris Printz built the program, stepping away after 2010 with his second consecutive Foothill League championship. Myron Watkins then took over the program, going two seasons without a win in league, 5-21 overall a year ago. Now it is Alan VanHook at the Grizzlies's helm, a man who previously was an assistant at West Ranch, and before that at Saugus. The three words best summing up what VanHook is doing? Starting from Scratch.
(Alan VanHook - "I believe we are an up and coming team...")
(VanHook - "We've got a sophomore, we've got a freshman...")
So far the Grizzlies are 1-6 on the young season, with their lone win coming against Simi Valley. The six losses, however, have been by an average margin of 22 points.
(VanHook-"Right now our number one thing is..."
VanHook mentions three players who will have an impact on the Grizzlies success, including one who left the program to go to Hart only to return for this his senior season.
(VanHook-"Right now I believe...")
(Gully-"I think we just have a lot of...")
(VanHook-"We'll be competitive...")
VanHook clearly has realistic goals for his team this year. As a first-year head coach, he wants to build a program that wins, and he is using his PAST to lay the foundation.
(VanHook-")
Turning to the college basketball scoreboard The Master's College Lady Mustangs remain undefeated and 13th in the country after scoring a season-high 82 over William Jessup, the men at The Master's improve to 9-3 and should enter the national top 25 discussion after they took care of the Banana Slugs. Over at College of the Canyons the Lady Cougars have won seven of their last nine games, including a three-game sweep at the Orange Coast College Christmas Classic with wins over Irvine Valley, Southwestern and the host team. The men's team has improved to 7-4 on the year as they took two of three at the Saddleback Tournament in Orange County. The Cougars will be in action this Thursday at the Cougar Cage as they face ElCamino. An early tip-off at 4 in the afternoon for that game. That's going to do it for us today on Inside Sports. Thanks for being here everyone. We will see you again next time.
