Hi again everybody and welcome once again to our Holiday edition of Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to give you high school and college basketball highlights from the past week, a preview of the Saugus boys basketball team, and I'll introduce to a sport that gives those who love to race cars a safe and economical way to rev their inner motor. But our lead story comes from West Ranch High School as the new coach for the football team has been announced, a man West Ranch principal Bob Vincent said was quote, head and shoulders above the other candidates, Jan Miller. I asked the former JV head coach for the Wildcats what his plans are for the team moving forward.
(Miller-"We've been a predominantly running team...")
Miller, a 23-year veteran with the Marines and currently a member of the LAPD, will bring virtually his entire coaching staff up from the JV, including Andy Markel his offensive coordinator.
(Markel)
The assistant head coach and offensive and defensive line coach will be Robin Downs, who has been with Miller for the last five years at the freshman and JV levels.
(Downs)
Miller is 16-4 over the last two JV seasons, which includes a league championship in 2011 and 2nd place this past year. He also won a championship with the freshman team being, what he calls, an approachable disciplinarian.

Turning to high school basketball where the Foothill League had a few non-league games of note. First a GREAT game at Hart High School where the undefeated Indians were taking on the 4-8 Culver City Centaurs. Hart's Nico Cruz starts things with the steal, passes it up to Andrew MacArthur for the easy lay-up. The Centaurs showed their strengths as well. Wesley Dixon passes to Justin Montgomery for the open jumper. Then Chris Edwards with a steal on the inbounds, dishes it off to Montgomery again for the bucket. Later in the 1st quarter, Montgomery drives to the basket but gets BLOCKED by MacArthur who then lobs it up to Lewis Stallworth for the and 1 basket and Hart is up 14 - 10 after the made free throw. More Hart defense as Culver City's Harrison Yette gets trapped in the corner, throws it cross court, but MacArthur picks it off and dishes to sophomore Myles Franklin for the slam! Hart went into the half up 8. 42 - 34. Moving ahead to the end of the 3rd quarter, David Handler misses the lay up, but Isaac Girley beat the buzzer with his tipped shot and a 7 - 0 run by Culver City to end the 3rd. In the 4th quarter with Hart up by two, the Centaurs' Cameron Robinson steals the pass and takes it coast to coast for the and 1 bucket to tie the game at 63 a piece. Hart's defense comes up big with Franklin's steal for two of his 15 points. With 10 seconds left and the game tied at 68, the Indians look to get the last game-winning shot. Chase White finds Lewis Stallworth all alone under the basket and the Indians go up by two and start the celebration. But there was still 3.5 seconds on the clock. The inbounds goes to Justin Montgomery, who dribbles the length of the court, gets to the corner, lofts the shot and at the buzzer drains it. Tie ball game. We're going to overtime. In the extra frame the Indians pulled away. This three from Frank Lonsinger helped lift Hart to an 82-78 victory and go to 10-0 on the non-league season. Stallworth led the Indians with 17 points in the game. (82-78)
Over at Saugus the Centurions were looking to avoid their third straight loss as they hosted the Blair Vikings. Defense showed itself for Saugus early as Jeff Ashburn intercepts the pass, tosses it to Nick Olinn who then feeds Keegan Alexander for the finish. With full court pressure, 6-7 senior Jacob Dawe gets the steal, sends the lead up to Chris Lockwood who takes it all the way for the lay up. Just before the half, Olinn comes up with the stolen pass and gave it up to Zack Garlitos for 3 to finish the half for the Centurions on a 17 - 4 run. In the second half on the Vikings inbound, Will O'Keeffe to Trej Floyd back to O'Keeffe who dumped it off to Simpson for the dunk. He finished with a game-high 24 points. But the Centurions defense and transition offense was far too much for the Vikings as Saugus forces a turnover, Ashburn up to Alexander, dishes off to Stephen Jones for the unselfish play. Saugus improves to 7-3 overall with the big win over Blair. (80-48)
Turning to college basketball as the 7-4 College of the Canyons Cougars faced the 4-3 Warriors from El Camino College. Former Valencia Viking Terrez Scott finds himself in some trouble but gets the ball to Tyler Barber for the 3. On the other end of the floor, David Howard buys some time and spacing and as the shot clock winds down knocks down a three of his own. Answering back from downtown was 6-3 sophomore Jaylen Bland and we've got ourselves a 3 point shootout. Late in the first half, another former Viking, David Horst comes up with the steal, dishes it off to Bland and off the fake and from the baseline knocks down his 5th 3 point field goal of the half. Cougars lead by 13 at the break. Coming out of the half, the Cougars apply the pressure. Bland intercepts the pass to get the fast break jam. But the Warriors start a comeback. Down by as much as 17, Brandon Boyd with the pass to Brandon Franklin for the and 1, and the Warriors are within nine. But Bland with a huge night drains his 7th three of the night. He finished with 30 points and 10 boards as the Cougars go to 8-4 on the season with the 13-point win. (79-66).
At Bross Gymnasium the undefeated and 13th-ranked The Master's College Lady Mustangs hosted the 10-4 Argos from the University of Great Falls Montana. And early on it was all Mustangs. Theresa Brown in the post with the hook bank shot. Then after an Argos miss, Brown with the board, to sophomore point guard Whitney Best, up to senior Lena Rivera for the lay up. Olivia Thompson came off the bench and caught fire as well. She hits two of her career-best 11 points and the Lady Mustangs open with a 13-2 run. The Argos finally got some more points as Erin Legal drives and passes off to an open Sydnee Burke for three. Back come the Lady Mustangs. Rivera with the pump fake dished it to Brown for the easy score and go into the half up 43 - 15. Mustangs played great defense all night as Thompson comes up with the steal and gives up the ball to Jackie Marshall for the lay in. Marshall scored 15 in the game. Kimmy Iverson gets into the 3-point shooting spree, helping The Master's shoot 52% from behind the arc. Sophomore Millie Rivera forces one of the 26 turnovers made by the Argos and took it all the way for two. Millie's older sister Lena draws the defenders, leaving Brown open for the easy bucket as she finished with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebrounds. The Lady Mustangs stay perfect at 9 - 0 with the 38-point victory. (86-48)
We're going to take a break here on Inside Sports and when we return we are going to preview the Saugus boys basketball team, and later a story on RC car racing and the track located right in the middle of the Santa Clarita Valley. That's all coming up on Inside Sports.

Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. The Saugus boys basketball team finished the season 16-11 overall last season, 5-5 and in fourth place in the Foothill League. Graduating from that team was All-League Jeremy Gatewood, who led the Centurions with 15.3 points a game, and Ryan Webb, who may have been one of the top scorers in the league had injury not ended his season before league play even began. This year head coach Derek Ballard enters his 5th year as head coach, 10th overall with the program. He likes the multiple options this year's squad gives him.
(Ballard-"We're more balanced...")
The Centurions are 6-3 in the early going of the 2012-2013 campaign, with an average margin over their opponents of 18 points per game. They have scored an average of 63 points a game while keeping opponents to under 45.
(Ballard-"Defensively they are...")
The go to man clearly this year will be three-year starter Chris Lockwood, the second leading scorer from a year ago who has taken the mantle from his mentor, Jeremy Gatewood.
(Ballard-"He know that the buck...")
(Lockwood-"")
(Ballard-"Jeremy was a kid...")
Some of those other guards are Jeff Ashburn and point guard Jacob Tobon.
(Ballard-"Our floor general...")
(Ballard-"Jeff Ashburn...")
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports and as we do I want to introduce you to Dustin Soto, the Wendy's of Santa Clarita Student Athlete of the Week.

Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. The passion level for racing can get very high. Ask any devoted NASCAR fan. Fot most, they want to do it themselves but finding that extra million or two between the sofa cushions to fund a team and get it up to speed... well, let's just say those sofas really don't exist. But for some, the thrill of racing is fast becoming a popular sport. John Kendall reports.
