Hi again everybody and welcome once again to our Holiday edition of Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. I'm Dave Caldwell. And for the next 30 minutes we are going to give you high school and college basketball highlights from the past week, a preview of the Hart boys basketball team, and the unique approach George Velarde is taking at Sierra Vista Junior High in Canyon Country to teach P.E. Let's start in Placerita Canyon where the 9-3 Mustangs from The Master's College were taking on the leading scorer in NAIA Division 2 in Adam Herman and the 6-7 Concordia Cavaliers out of Portland, Oregon. The Master's had their hands full early as the hot shooting Willy Ligon hits the double clutch shot. Ligon had 14 in the first half alone Then on the Cavs next possession, Robbie Jackson brings it up the floor and dishes off to the 6-10 Justyn Searle for the slam. Searle had 13 points and FIVE BLOCKS in the game. Mustangs put the pressure on and Devin Dyer comes up with the stolen pass and the fast break score. The Cavs turned the ball over 11 times in the half. Off the Cavs inbounds its Herman for the "and one." The Mustangs held Herman to just four points in the first half. In the second half, the Mustangs push it up the court, into the hands of Karlberg who takes it to the hoop, BLOCKED by Searle, but Logan Quinn comes up with the rebound and gets the pretty lay up off the glass. Then, with 3:18 left in the game and the Mustangs up by two, Ligon hits the go-ahead 3 pointer to go up 1. Moments later, with 17 seconds in regulation and the Mustangs down by three, Dyer gives it to Karlberg for 3! NO GOOD. But Chris Patureau rebounds, passes it to Lance Reeves in the corner and... The bank was open late in Placerita Canyon. Tie ball game. Seven seconds remain and the Cavs are out of time outs. Herman for the win... no good. Overtime at Bross Gym. In the extra frame, Dyer on the other end drives and misses, Austin Loeb no good, but hello Chris Patureau cleaning up the boards for his 9th OFFENSIVE board of the night. He would finish with 13 rebounds and nine points. With ten seconds to go and The Master's up by four, Ligon for three! He would finish with a game-high 31 points. After two made free throws, the Mustangs now up by three. 4.4 seconds left. Into the hot hands of Ligon... but not this time. As the Mustangs keep their win streak alive at five and go to 10-3 on the season. (74 - 71)
The Lady Mustangs have a streak of their own they are working on... Undefeated on the season. The Montana State-Northern Skylights wanted something to say about that as part of the Jersey Mike's Holiday Classic at The Master's. The Mustangs started hot, with Theresa Brown getting the rebound off the Skylights miss, passes up to Zoe Scott to Lena Rivera for the fast break bucket. The Mustangs would start the game on a 9 - 2 run. Later in the half the Skylights show they can play basketball too. Taylor Cummings finds Kylee Denham for the back door basket. Denham had eight points and eight rebounds in the game. Later in the first half, Whitney Best brings it up, fakes the shot and dishes it to Scott for three! Mustangs up at the half 30 - 19. The second verse was same as the first. Kelly Burns finds Jackie Marshall cutting for the easy deuce. Marshall had a game-high 14 points. Millie Rivera intercepts the pass and passes up to big sister Lena Rivera for the pull up jumper. Lena finished with 11. The Mustangs defense was too much forcing 19 turnovers in the game as Marshall puts the game away. The Mustangs easily defeat the Skylights, plus UC-Merced the next night, to go to 11-0 on the season. (62-45)
For 23 years now the College of the Canyons mens basketball team has been hosting their annual Cougar Holiday Classic. It's become the best way to see some of the best junior college players in Southern California. The Cougars, 8-4 on the season, started off with the 9-5 Palomar Comets at the Cougar Cage. Early in the 1st half, Temjay Singleton gets things going for the Cougars with the turnaround J. Moments later it's Singleton again with the rebound, outlets to Terrez Scott who finds Tyler Barber wide open for the corner three. Palomar would answer right back with a three of their own from Chauncey Sirles. This game would go back and forth. The Comets's 7-foot-1 Joe Vaz would dominate the low post, helping put Palomar up by one at the break. The Cougars shot just 26 percent from the field in the first half, but Singleton would help change that in the second. He grabs the miss from Barber and throws up a tough turnaround... Count the bucket. He'd go on to convert the 3-point play. Later it's Jaylon Bland going coast-to-coast for the lay up, and that would ultimately be the difference in this one. Too much speed and athleticism for Palomar and the Cougars advance to the winner's side of the bracket... (65-55) ... where they face a Chaffey College Panthers squad that has won six straight coming into this one. Early on it's former Valencia Viking Terrez Scott driving to the basket and laying it home. The Panthers showed their athleticism often though. Deon Hall gets behind the defense for the easy lay up. Then in the second half it's more easy baskets. This time the slam by Justin Cole. The Cougars try to rally... Singleton knocks down the three from the corner pocket. Then Jaylon Bland decides to take it on his own, splits the defense and gets to the rim. That would cut the Chaffey lead to nine. Do we have a ball game? Deon Hall emphatically says NO. Chaffey goes on to win convincingly, (88-66) but lose a thriller to Antelope Valley in the championship game. As for the Cougars, they move to the third place game to play the Mira Costa Spartans, who lost to Antelope Valley by five in the semi-final. Early on the Cougars worked their transition well, with Tyler Barber getting the easy bucket underneath the glass. The Spartans, tho, pulled away and led by as much as 13 points in the first half. Austin Hershberger with the double-pump fake for the deuce and the long-range bomb from Andre Warren. In the second half the Canyons defense broke down as Bryce Lenart is left wide open under the basket for two. But the Cougars make a charge. Barber is left wide open in the corner, buries the three, but it would be too little too late as COC has to settle for fourth place. After the game, head coach Howard Fisher remained optimistic.

There was plenty of action on the high school hardwood as well, and as we have a week before the start of Foothill League play, let's take a look at the Overall standings. First in girls basketball where the Canyon Cowboys, ranked 5th in the latest CIF Division 2-AA poll, have the best record. Keep in mind non-league standings mean nothing when Foothill League play begins, but it certainly gives you an idea of the better teams going into league play. On the boys side, Hart is undefeated after showing very well in their Holiday tournament last week. West Ranch had a bad loss last week to Rancho Verde, but losing is not a bad thing going into league as it makes a team hungry for the win. It's going to be fun, and SCVTV will be there every step of the way, beginning with those Hart Indians and West Ranch Wildcats opening league against each other in both girls and boys basketball.
We're going to take a break here on Inside Sports and when we return we are going to preview the Hart boys basketball team, and later a story on the forward-thinking way P.E. is being taught at Sierra Vista Junior High. That's all coming up on Inside Sports.
(BREAK)
Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. The Hart boys basketball team is always expected to contend for a league championship, or at least place in the top three. Last year the Indians finished 17-11 overall, 6-4 and third place in league. Two years ago, in what was arguably a rebuilding year, Hart finished 13-13 and 5-5 in league. Tom Kelly is entering his 13th year as the Indians head coach, and at 13-0, Kelly admits this could be a very special year.
(Kelly-"Great group of kids...")
Just three season ago, the Indians went 0-10 in league, the first time Hart went winless in Foothill League play. Even though Kelly jokes he is still scarred by the memory, he was impressed with how hard his players wanted to work in the off-season that year, which ultimately built this undefeated team going into 2013.
(Kelly-"I think this group is way more talented...")
This season, like last, the Indians are led by youth, most notably sophomore guard Myles Franklin and junior forward Lewis Stallworth.
(Kelly-"
And when you ask Coach Kelly about Franklin...
(Kelly-"Same. Ditto...")
(Stallworth-"I believe we go 13 deep...")
(Kelly-"And it's not always...")
On any given night, any number of players, starters and those off the bench alike, can be scoring in double digits. It might be Stallworth or Franklin, but it's also likely the Indians will be led by Davis Koppenhaver, Niko Cruz or Andrew MacArthur.
(Stallworth-"I believe our bench...")
Tom Kelly is not the type of coach to brag or make predictions about his team, so for him to say this group of Indians could be doing something special this year means a lot.
(Kelly-"We've got to keep getting better...")
We are going to take a break here on Inside Sports and as we do I want to introduce you to Niko Lachman, the Wendy's of Santa Clarita Student Athlete of the Week.

Welcome back to Inside Sports, presented by Nissan of Valencia. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the obesity rate among children aged 12-19 years old, rose from just five percent in 1980, to over 18 percent in 2008. Getting junior high school-aged children to be active and want to stay active has become a challenge for any P.E. teacher. George Velarde from Sierra Vista Junior High in Canyon Country has been working on an innovative way to beat that rising rate of obesity, and his efforts caught the attention of Nike's Designed to Move Division, which produced this video.

That's going to do it for us today on Inside Sports. Thanks for being here everyone. We will see you again next time.
