[Hart District] Believing there are more career options than what teenagers are usually told, the U.S. Army is partnering with the William S. Hart School District, College of the Canyons and local elected officials to present the "Career Options in Challenging Times Workshop" on Thursday, Oct. 20.
The focus of the workshop is to help young people find a path to a successful career utilizing free resources offered by federal, state, and local agencies.
Agencies in attendance will be Americorps, California Conservation Corps, College of the Canyons, National Job Corps, and the U.S. Army Recruiting Command.
"You don't see California Conservation Corps in every city, same thing for Americorps. So we wanted to bring these resources to them," said Patsy Rubio, Public Affairs Specialist, U.S. Army.
Dr. Lance Izumi from the California Community College Chancellor's Office will moderate a panel discussion on military recruitment practices and career opportunities.
"Some students are not ready to go to college as soon as they get out of high school. Maybe they just want to build a skill or maybe they want to work on professional development. That's where the army comes in. We try to develop our soldiers to become professionals," said Rubio.
A second fusion panel entitled "Career and Education Preparation Programs" will be presented by the non-military agencies.
Parents, educators, students, graduate students and all interested community members are invited to attend.
The event will be held at the Golden Valley High School Theater, 27051 Robert C. Lee Parkway, Santa Clarita. The Career Expo portion will take place at two times, from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m and 8:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The workshop takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Assemblyman Cameron Smyth will welcome participants with opening remarks at 6:35 p.m.
Certificates will be awarded to educators upon completion of workshop.
The event is co-sponsored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich and U.S. Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Santa Clarita.
