Newhall Community Center Reading Program Teaches Kids How to "Eat Their Words"
New Program Provides Reading Assistance in a Fun, Interactive Way
The Newhall Community Center is now offering "Eat Your Words," a class specifically designed for Kindergarten through second graders who are struggling with reading. The class, which will be held Mondays from 4-4:50 p.m., is designed to join books and recipes, allowing for increased reading ability, creativity and exploration.
With "Eat Your Words," kids are read food-related books and encouraged to take turns reading. When the story ends, class members head to the City Center's kitchen to mix the related recipe's ingredients. One book selection, titled Mrs. Hippo's Pizza Parlor, allows children to practice reading before making pizza- a common kid favorite- and savoring their creation at the end of class.
"The 'Eat Your Words' program is truly a unique and innovative way to get kids into reading," said councilmember Laurie Ender. "The staff sees great improvement in the students with each session."
The Newhall Community Center is located at 22421 Market Street.
