No stranger to Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch in Placerita Canyon, A-lister Joel McCrea is back as Bat Masterson in this traditional Western directed by Joseph M. Newman.

The selection of Melody Ranch for Dodge City was probably no coincidence. Audiences were already familiar with it and knew what Dodge City was “supposed” to look like, since TV’s “Gunsmoke” debuted in 1955 and frequently used Melody Ranch for both interiors and exteriors. The series’ opening sequence on the main street of Melody Ranch was a constant throughout Gunsmoke’s black-and-white years.
