SCVTV’s Community Corner: Mission Opera Bringing ‘Susannah’ to SCV

In this segment from SCVTV’s Community Corner, hear about how Mission Opera is bringing the dramatic opera “Susannah” to the Santa Clarita community from two of the show’s castmembers, Gabriel Manro and Jeannine Allen.

Manro and Allen give a preview of the show, including discussing the storyline and their characters, as well as sharing an off-the-cuff sampling of their operatic singing.

Manro and Allen also touch on why they each believe it’s so important to have high-quality productions available to as many people as possible, each sharing their personal experiences with discovering opera and it’s influence on storytelling.

Experiencing opera may feel out-of-reach for many, but Mission Opera “strives to produce high-quality, accessible opera and musical theater, to provide members of the community the opportunity to participate at all levels of these productions, and to afford both participants and audiences enjoyment and a deeper appreciation of opera and musical theater”, as noted by their website.

“Susannah” is a dramatic opera by Carlisle Floyd that takes place in the Appalachian region in the United States; Floyd adapted the story from the Apocraphyl tale of “Susannah and the Elders”.

Note that this production contains mature themes; viewer discretion is advised.

Catch Mission Opera’s production of “Susannah” on Friday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, June 10 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. All performances will be at Canyon High School’s Performing Arts Center.
