SCVTV’s Community Corner: Season 6, Episode 23

This week on SCVTV’s Community Corner, we’re diving into the City’s annual State of the City event, a gala supporting therapy dogs, a not-so-haunted house for a great cause, new interactive art features, community fundraisers, education highlights, breast cancer awareness, adorable adoptable pets, and a spooky night on the ice.

Co-hosts Dave Caldwell and Carrie Lujan kick things off in the Opening Segment with exciting information about the State of the City, which is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m. at the Canyon Country Community Center. The annual event highlights the City’s accomplishments over the course of the year. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Hart Park: History in Every Frame,” which will pay tribute to the local gem becoming the City’s 40th park.

Next, we hear about the meaningful Titania K9 Fund’s “WANTED” Gala, which honored and raised funds for the Children’s Hospital’s Dog Therapy Program. Eight absolutely adorable canines were on hand along with their incredible and dedicated handlers. For more information, visit https://www.titaniak9fund.org/.

Spooky season is here! But if your little ghouls and goblins prefer something not so scary, head on over to Damian’s Not-So-Haunted House and Bake Sale! The haunted house is part of the “Please Save Damian Campaign,” benefiting the Wylder Nation Foundation, which aims to slow the progress of ASMD Type A, often referred to as “Baby Alzheimer’s.” Damian was diagnosed with the disease at the age of one. The not-so-haunted house will feature new additions this year, including a train ride experience, new but familiar characters, and a photo opportunity. The popular bake sale will also make a return! The schedule for Damian’s Not-So-Haunted House is as follows:

Open 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 17-18, Oct. 23-25, and Oct. 29-Nov. 1. For more information, or if you’d like to learn more about Damian’s journey, visit https://www.savedamian.com/home.

The City of Santa Clarita just launched its newest feature, Walk of Western Stars Augmented Reality. The app aims to bring art to everybody straight to their smartphones. If you’d like to give it a try, head on over to santaclaritaarts.com.

More from This Week’s Guest Lineup:

We then chat with Matt Nelson, Chief Executive Officer of the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley, who shares all the fun details of the annual SCV Sheriff’s Station Halloween Carnival and Haunted Jailhouse, a beloved community tradition that’s family-friendly and meaningful. The event will include face-painting, ziplining, and Dunk-a-Deputy! We also meet Deputy Mariela Picard, the SCV Sheriff’s Station’s newest public information officer.

Up next, it’s time to raise a glass with Amy Daniels, executive director for WiSH Education Foundation’s highly anticipated Wine Under the Roof, a premier event benefiting public education. The impactful celebration will include a wine and appetizer hour, a five-course seated dinner curated by local, talented chefs, and live entertainment. Christy Alben, Wine Under the Roof chair, also put a spotlight on another WiSH influential event, “Ascend.” The conference brings together strong, successful women from a variety of fields to encourage and empower girls to be comfortable in their own skin. Even though the event is geared toward girls 13–18, boys are also welcome (and encouraged) to attend the event.

Following WiSH, we hear all about the demanding yet worthwhile curriculum offered by Academy of the Canyons Middle College High School (AOC). Principal Dr. Juliet Fine, AOC principal, shares valuable information about the academy, which is one of the many schools in the William S. Hart Union High School District. Fine was also joined by Emma Campos and Jaden Delact, who tap into why they chose AOC and what they love about being students there.

Next up, we hear from Dr. Anjali Date, medical director for the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center, and Renée Léon, manager of the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Foundation, who shine light on Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Date shared valuable information on updated screening guidelines, promising new treatments, and how to properly advocate for yourself when it comes to your health and wellness. Léon also highlights the wide range of comprehensive services offered at the Breast Center, including breast cancer screenings, mammograms, and cutting-edge breast cancer treatments.

We then hear from Lauren Schiro, ranch manager for St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary, who brought along Raffi, an absolutely adorable and lovable nine-year-old Maltese mix ready for his forever family. His sweet and calm demeanor make Raffi a great addition to any home.

Finally, glide your way into a ghoulishly fun time at The Cube’s Skate and Scare! Get a spooky sneak preview on a brand-new episode of “This Week in Santa Clarita.”
