Finding Art Santa Clarita | See Canyon Country Community Center’s ‘Sculpture Garden’ Come to Life
|
The “Finding Art” crew takes a look at how Hiromi Takizawa and Elijah Wooldridge’s “Sculpture Garden” art came to life at the Canyon Country Community Center. “Sculpture Garden” is a play on the natural landscape of Santa Clarita, highlighting three aspects of the flora and fauna of the area: wildflowers, the Western Scrubb-Jay, and Vasquez Rocks. Each piece exists outdoors within the quad area at the Canyon Country Community Center. “Elijah’s from [the] Sonora Desert in Arizona and I [grew] up in [the] Japanese Alps in Japan, so we all always wanted to make art that combines with nature,” Takizawa notes. Coming from the Orange County area, they conducted field research in Santa Clarita, taking note of the natural landscape. Fabricated from steel, the sculptures stand tall within the landscape of the Canyon Country Community Center. In making the sculptures, the artists were hoping to bring a sense of familiarity, vibrancy, and wonder to viewers.
