Finding Art Santa Clarita | Watch ‘The Living Quilt’ Come to Life

See how CalArts School of Film/Video faculty member John Hawk and his Videographics students created “The Living Quilt”, a projection piece of abstract, moving pieces that were projected onto the walls of the Newhall Crossings plaza. The piece was commissioned by the City of Santa Clarita and was projected on the side of the Old Town Newhall parking structure, facing the Newhall Crossings courtyard. The piece was displayed on Friday, January 27, 2023 through Sunday, January 29, 2023 in the evening. The living quilt displayed abstract moving imagery, created by Hawk and his students, and were inspired by “quilting bees” of the early 1800s American frontier. “These gatherings were more than a means of creating quilts quickly [as they became] social events important for the often lonely and isolated life of pioneer woman,” as stated by the press release for “The Living Quilt” on the CalArts website.
