Finding Art Santa Clarita | Ted Garcia
|
Ted Garcia Jr. is a Native American artist and keeper of many Native traditions including song, storytelling, and stone carving. An enrolled member of the Fernandeño-Tataviam Band of Mission Indians who traces his lineage to Chaguayanga, the Tataviam village at Castaic Junction prior to European contact in 1769, Garcia is also chief of the Southern Chumash and spiritual advisor to the annual Hart of the West Powwow in Newhall. His Tataviam, Chumash, Tongva, and Vanyume ancestors live in the Santa Clarita, San Fernando, and Antelope valleys. Garcia’s carvings draw from the spirit within the stone. Revealing animals such as bears, dolphins, California quails, and seals, he uses locally sourced soapstone and alabaster. Garcia was highlighted in Season 1, Episode 2 of SCVTV’s “Finding Art Santa Clarita.” (c) 2018 SCVTV
